It was Evans that got injured, not Boldin. And in all honesty, Waller right now is a bigger version of Torrey with better hands. Torrey couldn't run routes to save his life as a rookie (or later on) and that was Waller's issue coming into the NFL. Only thing is, Waller seems to be improving a lot more than Torrey did his rookie preseason. Now in terms of why can't Waller step in like Torrey did, 2 reasons. Draft selection and the other WRs. Torrey was a 2nd round pick so he was going to be given a shot at someone point. Waller as a 6th rounder isn't privilege to that same opportunity, he definitely has to earn it. And Torrey was competing against a guy drafted two rounds after him (Doss) and an undrafted WR (LaQuan) and both of them were also rookies. Waller is competing with another 6th rounder, technically, who the coaches already liked (Campanaro), a 1st rounder (Perriman) and 3 other guys that have already gained a decent level of respect from the coaches (Brown, Aiken, and Butler). If this was 2011, Waller would be no worse than our #3 WR. Hell, we may have never even gone after Evans. In 2015, he's going to have to fight hard, which he has been doing, but still may be an inactive on gameday should he make the 53.
