I think Ozzie is a great people picker. He has multiple starters in most drafts. Most teams would love to get one, he gets three and sometimes four starters a draft. I think our contracts given over the last 5 to 6 years have been head scratching. All the dead money we paid Ngata, Monroe's contract, Flacco was cap friendly in the beginning but now we either delay the check or have to extend, both of Webbs contracts, Jimmy is not living up to his after only one good half season.
I think Buck will be a great back in the NFL. Za Smith has tons of potential. I think Breshad has the physical gifts and a great head on his shoulders already going through a season that tested a young man as much as I can think and he handled it well. I think this crop can really be one of the best drafts we have had.
Question on the cap, Say if we keep Pitta on the roster but he goes on the PUP list. Does that still count against the cap. I know if he retires or we cut him he will. Also I think the June first date has a factor in his salary cap cost as well. Just not sure on the PUP.
I don't think restructuring Flacco is a given. I do think it will happen but Ozzie has prepared for life without doing it. It helps us in the long run if we restructure next year as we have to spread the money out anyway and Linta is not going to do us any favors. I think Joe does want weapons around him and has spoken up about it in the press, whereas he did not during his first contract negotiation.
Also, I saw a mock draft who had us taking Myles Jack at 6. I would honestly love that pick. He can play inside or outside, and is great in coverage. Daryl Smith had a solid year again, but age began to show in coverage last year. Jack would be a great replacement for D. Smith after next year. Mosley and Jack together on the inside, with Jernagin and B. Williams up front....wow.
I would like that Pick too! But I think pass rusher is top priority. We have good young backers behind Darryl. Pass rusher and corner are needs, we cant afford not to nail.
I think we already have KO's replacement on the team with Urshel. Ozzie knows he cant afford to waist money and let Monroe go. Also we cant overreact to his injuries. I think he will be back full strength. We will probably draft a tackle or two in this draft that can learn behind Monroe and Wagner and still bring back 805 of a line that two years ago was one of the best in the NFL. I think we will not need to franchise Tuck. Ozzie and Harbs know the value of a good special teams unit. I think we lock tucker up for 4 to 5 years on a contract that's good for both sides. With us playing out doors in the elements against a tough division, and factoring the further extra points. He is not going anywhere.
If Pitta retires, the dead money still counts for the Ravens. Either he will be a Post June first cut , or Best case scenario is he can play at a high level .
We have to play better technique on the back end. we als really need more speed in our linebacker group. Mosely and Smith are both essentially Mikes. We need Mosley to take over the mike position and get a speed Will backer that can cover the middle of the field . Also we have to figure out something with our Outside linebakcers. It hurts me to see Doom and Upshaw drop into coverage and cover RB's and slot recievers when we run zone out of our Base d. Upshaw has eaten his way into a three pint stance . I wold use him as a 5 technique over guy next to Williams and Timmy.
i cant see us taking any of those potential cap casualties. the great thing is this year we can trade comp picks where in years past we coldnt. i can see Ozzie doing some draft day dealing. I also would not be surporsed if we trade out of the six spot and pick up a few more picks and trade them to get back into the first round.. Say trade to ten or twelve and get an additional second and fourth . Couple those and trade back in to get a pick around 25 to 30. We could get a pass rusher and a corner. Not a good recieving draft so I see us going Defense early and look for a burner in third or fourth round. the Steelers seem to find Gems with speed in those rounds.
we still need another reciever. Perriman on the outside, Kamar on the other ,Smitty in the slot, and maybe one more burner. We need more speed and recievers who can get of the line fast.
"The Ravens always find a way to keep ‘ascending’ players"
McPhee, Ellerbe, Torrey... just to name a few.
No NFL organization can retain ALL of their ascending young talents. That's how the cap system works.
Totally agree its hard to keep ascending players however the three you named may not fall into that catagory. Ellerbe did nothing in Miami and was a waste of money, McPhee was a situational player who could not on his best day beat out Sizzle and Doom, and Torrey in my opinion is what he will be at this point. These were players that were put in a good place to show off there talents but far from players in Yanda's caliber or Ko.
We can pay both. Zuttah after next year can be replaced by a less expensive and probablly better by then Urschel. Wagner is Cheap. We can redo Monroe's deal. Flacco will get renegotiated. Rice dead money leaves. If Our reciever step up this year, Smith Sr may retire. Pitta can be renegotiated if he plays or goes if he doesn't. I dont think Ozzie wants to ever get weak up the middle again.
Were there any better signings in the NFL last year then Steve and Forsett! What classy guys!
Great Article!! I have a new found respect for him. Thanks for the hard work Coach. You have the best unit in the NFL!!
Every article about him makes me happier and happier! I really love this guy. I think I know the next Jersey I'll get.
Goes to show you stats are nto everything. Schaub threw for over 4ooo yards 3 times and is a pro bowler......He is backing up Joe....Jow is the better QB, I dont care what any stat says. With that being said, I do feel really good about the QB room. A lot of smarts in those four walls.
instead of saying things he cant control like predicting wins, or irrelavent things like Pro bowls, he focuses on what he can control to win. Great leadership #8! I love it. Not the sexy answer but the best possible one.
Oh how I missed Late for work!!
Eisenberg needs to be tested for Performance reducing drugs, this article is nonsense. "Webb, 29, is a veteran, smart enough to take care of himself." then why has he been hurt three different times. He is arguably our second best player in the secondary and the most expirienced. No way Jose.
Scouting report on Jerry Rice, Bad hands and too slow. Just goes to show you how much you can rely on those reports. Ozzie drafted him first round and he has and NFL pedigree with his dad. I dont like predicting things, but safe to say ...He going to be just fine.
Article after Article , I am becoming really impressed with the characther of the Men we have on our team. I honestly never knew much about him, now that I do, I am happy he is a Raven.
Darn , this is the first time I read an article on this site and darn near started to tear up. I am really pulling for these two guys. What a great story!!!!
I wonder how KLM is doing ? Anyone hear anything?
Lets make this clear, our Secondary was bad becuase of injuries not talent or coaching. Our seconday along with our agressive front 7 will be the talk of the NFL. Watch.

Great Signing! He plays like a raven! Can not underestimate special team players and a versatile Linebacker who can play all 4 positions in our 3-4 and practices hard every day!
