I agree. Ed is worth about 3 mill a year at this point.
Hell, 3 million with a crap ton of incentives would be fine with me.
If you can beat 'em, join 'em?
49ers got a lot better and we now have a huge question mark at our number 2 WR spot.
6th? It's better than cutting him but dang, that pick is almost an early 7th. Maybe we can package it to move up in another round?
Trying to find the bright side....
If we are trying to stay young, let's sign Ellerbe, Pitta and Dickson. Let Reed walk.
blasphemy. The man can still run. Had some big plays in the play offs. And still effects the pass and the run game. Yeah he hasn't been the best tackler since the nerve injury, but he still hits hard and is a top 5 Safety. He's got at least 3 good years left. If you let Reed go we will be out of SB contention for the next 2 years at least. We don't have anyone that can fill his shoes on our roster and there are no quality safety free agents out there either.
How is he making an effect in the run game? I saw a couple "Big hits" this year but I saw a guy who couldnt tackle too..a guy who every missed tackle would act like he was injured.
Ed is not the player he once was, but you are ignoring the intangibles that he brings to the table. His reputation alone brings fear to the opposing team's OC and QB. He is a huge leader in the locker room And he is not only a safety, but a damn good coach as well. Ed Reed is well worth $5 mil. to this Team in 2013.
Agree to disagree.
Ed Reed is the greatest safety in NFL history and still plays at a high levels and his presence alone changes offensive gameplans. He is worth every penny. Without him our secondary wouldn't be nearly as good. I've seen our young guys and they need some more time
I love Ed Reed, I agree, he is one of the best safeties of all time. All good things must come to an end, we can't afford a one dimensional player, especially when we are revamping our inside linebackers. Reed doesn't attack the box on run plays and lead our team in missed tackles with like 15.
He isn't worth 5 million. He got his ring, I wish he had retired like Ray.
looks good but you forgot Ed Reed
As much as people malign our defense they still showed up despite the inconsistant officiating our defense is as much to thank for this SB as our offense is. You need a complete team to win in this league
You need complete players to win, that's why I didn't forget Ed Reed...I just don't know if he is worth the money. He is old, injured and we need to see what our young guys have.
This makes sense with the exception of Reed. IMO it would cripple the D(locker room) to lose both Ray and Ed in the same year.
We would still have Haloti and Terrell.
Ed is going to want around 5 million and while he is good in coverage, he isn't exactly the ball hawk we had 2-3 years ago and you can tell he is playing injured.
i like and agree with allot of your ideas . i am anxious to see omar brown on the field more every time he's on the field he makes plays. well thought out and well put together . i also think mcclelland and bynes should be given more playing time i like what i have seen so far from them .i just saw a interview jacoby jones did on nfl network and he said "we have weapons no one even knows about" no clue if he meant offense or defense but my guess is offense so thats encouraging.
Guys on the team call Omar Brown "Baby Ed Reed"... I would love to see competition between Omar and Christian.
Another option we could go with is keep Boldin, Leach and re-sign McKinnie (or a FA LT) and Pitta (maybe Dickson. I want to keep our whole offense together as much as possible. Let's build the defense up through the draft. Let's look at the needs of defense:
DE-NT-DE
DE:Art Jones, Pernell Mcphee
NT: NEED, Terrance Cody
DE: Haloti Ngata, Bryan Hall
I think we need an elite NT so we can raise the level of play with guys like Ngata and McPhee. If we have a force at NT, they will get better matchups and be able to excel in run defense AND pass rush.
OLB-ILB-ILB-OLB
Rush: Suggs, NEED
Will: Albert McClellan
Mike: Jameel McClain, NEED
Sam: Upshaw
Ideally we want to draft an ILB. But we have seen these guys play and it would take pressure off of signing Ellerbe to a lot of money. We could get an inside linebacker or OLB in the 2nd, and get depth in the 3rd.
CB-S-S-CB
CB: Lardarius Webb, Chykie Brown, Asa Jackson
FS: Christian Thompson, Omar Brown
SS: Bernard Pollard, NEED
CB: Corey Graham, Jimmy Smith
Yay, Webb will be back! We look pretty solid at Corner. MAYBE add another one in later rounds. Pollard is solid. Free safety is the biggest hole and we will see what we have with Omar and Christian.
While I am not saying this is going to be the best defense for us, it let's us have the cap space to put forward the best offense.
As many of you might now, I am a huge fan of defense. I love defense. But I think it would be best at this point, to put the money in the offense so they can stay consistent while we replace Ray, Reed, Ellerbe (in this option), Cary, Ma'ake and Kruger.
Again, I trust the front office, but this is something that could help us keep the guys we want (with exception of Ellerbe).
This is who I put above Boldin in importance:
1. Ray Rice
2. Torrey Smith
3. Dennis Pitta
4. Boldin
I don't know if I'd put Boldin ahead of Boldin there at number 4... Or vice versa, that's a tough one
Agreed, why tamper with what worked (to the tune of 11TD 0INT 1SB no less). It's always interesting to see how the FO responds to these situations though
Basically, we need to re-sign McKinnie and Pitta.
I'm with you on that, I don't think we're in a position where we can pay him what he feels he should be paid. His play over the past two years has been declining (relative term, of course) to the point that, at least I can say this for myself, I was questioning what Ed was doing on multiple occasions
He would get at least 5 million, he isn't worth 5 million. Boldin > Reed. I want to keep that offense together as much as possible.
Well everyone sent that at the same time....
How much cap space does cutting Boldin save us?
Boldin is my second WR ever, right after Moss, but if we use that money to land a quality LT or DT, then I'd support this
His cap number is like 7.5 million, actual salary is 6 million. So we would save 6 million I believe.
Like I've said before, don't pursue Reed and see if you can restructure either Ngata or Suggs.
Obviously the FO has more important reasons for cutting a guy like Boldin but I have to wonder if a side benefit of doing so isn't the FO's way of telling Flacco "you wanted to be the highest paid...this is what happens".
Ok, I'm sorry but 7 Million dollars has nothing to do with "this is what happens". It has to do with the large amount of money that we are giving Suggs and Ngata. Not saying they deserve it or not, but a QB making 7 million this year is awesome and clearly not the issue.
Yup
11 pages in a couple hours?
Gonna break the Bart Scott record
I am under the widely assumed thought that 7.5 million per year players, deserving of their money, especially wide receivers make plays and get open because they are exceptionally gifted despite their meandering offensive systems. Do people forget the fact that our wide receivers never got open before the playoffs and that has led to losses in the past. If boldin is strictly a slot receiver and get be an elite outside receiver any more, it justifies a pay cut or just a plain cut from the team.
I am just fairly evaluating play, omitting playoff heroics. We have to move on guys and gals to bigger and better things. Ozzie has a plan(remember derrick mason)
Joe Flacco also has to target him. Q makes his living attacking the middle of the field, Cam didn't understand this fully.
Let me say this about the impending boldin cut, it was just a matter of time. We were going to have to lose somebody deemed viable to sign ellerbe, rfas, and make the necessary fa signings.
Considering, before the playoffs, boldin underperformed to his No.1 contract as a receiver, It would have been prudent to cut him anyways. And people on this very same board predicted the same thing. Boldin is slow and does not embodoy the explosive offense we will have with Joe in the future.Sentimentality is good for a month, but the NFL is what will you do for me, not what did you do for me.
And to be honest, the only position worth taking at no.32 according to many mock drafts would be a tavon austin, deandre hopkins player(providing no dts or pass rushers fall). Not te'o or matt elam. So cutting boldin is good for the draft and cap.
Guys, get ready for even more cuts.
Vonta leach, (4 mill for fullback)
Ayanbadejo(1 mill for declining st)
Jacoby???(5 million for a 3 wr and kr)
the fo is trying to keep guys like ellerbe and make signings to preserve the longevity of the team and not to simply keep the same guys from last year. Ozzie has a plan.
In Ozzie We Trust
Prior to the playoffs, Joe under performed as a 5 year veteran. A lot has to do with the offensive line and play calling as you can see that Joe and Q were on fire in the playoffs. Torrey is the true number 1 on the team hence the double teams.
I'd rather not go into 2013 with 2 brand new Ts next year. Really 3.5 isn't that much for a starting RT who has never missed a game and can play LT in a pinch.
True. Just spit balling, trying to see what we could do instead of cutting the catfish.
To this team:
Boldin > Reed
Boldin > Ellerbe (a guest of Harbaugh's doghouse)
Boldin=McKinnie (a guest of Harbaugh's doghouse)
Ellerbe is good but I don't know if he is worth the loot we will be forced to give him. I am hearing the Eagles want him really bad. Boldin would be the better priority.
As for Big Mac, why pay a QB 120 million dollars if you are going to put turnstile Oher at LT to have him taking hits and not performing to the best of his ability.
Either Gabe or Arnie, did a thread about how going for Terron Armstead at 32 might be a great idea. If we can get McKinnie for a year to have Terron play behind, that might be the best option.
Perhaps, but Ellerbe is proven and was key for us down the stretch (our DMVP IMO), so I wouldn't go that far just yet
Him or Graham for sure.
this whole thread is moot http://www.nfl.com/n...cut-from-ravens he won't take a cut he is going on the market .
They are still talking.
Gonna be honest. Hate the thought of our WR corp not having Q!
Call up Mason? ![]()

Here are the Cap hits for the Ravens.
Nothing against Haloti, but instead of cutting Boldin, why don't we try restructuring Ngata's contract? Why don't we save a million by cutting Ayanbedjo or Cody? Michael Oher is getting paid 3.5 million this year, where this draft has the deepest level of offensive tackles. Should we look to move him before he is a free agent next year?
Just food for though, I get that the older guy goes. I do. I just don't see us doing well with out that possession guy and Reed/Doss are not the option.
Flacco gets the house and Boldin's offer wasnt even enticing enough for him to stay? Yikes!
Flacco gets the house, kids, dog, cars, bank account. Boldin gets a crappy studio apartment with a fridge with a six pack of Schiltz beer after a hard days work.
This divorce is getting ugly.
