  1. That's My Boy got a lot of hate. But just like you, it made me laugh more than most movies this year. Perhaps because I enjoy Raunchy comedy. I think most people just want to hate on Sandler, its the cool thing to do nowadays.
  2. Very good pick. I agree, there is something about small budgets and time travel. Primer is right up there as one of the best time travel movies all time. And like I said in the post you quoted. I also like Timecrimes. It isn't as sci-fieee as Looper or Primer but it is a fun take on time travel in a small scope. Be prepared to be pissed off at stupidity. I like how on the IMDB messages boards, this movie allows every Brit to take shots at how stupid Americans are. Its sort of hard to defend w/ this movie. Think about it though. People born today will have a lot more movies to catch up on than we did. I've stopped being surprised when someone says they haven't seen something yet.
  3. Anyone see Compliance (2012)? I watched it without knowing anything about it. During the movie I thought it was utter crap. The story was not believable at all, these people are too dumb, etc.....I was pissed off the whole time at the stupidity. After the movie I did some research. Everything that occurred in the movie actually occurred in real life. Everything! Instead, this movie has now made me lose my faith in humanity even more (don't know if that's even possible).
  4. I think its also awesome how Quvenzhané Wallis got a nomination for Best Actress. I was hoping to see that. Her facial expressions in Beasts of the Southern Wild IMO are the best part about the film. With that being said, she's probably not going to win. She is still a first time actress who's character saw restricted lines.
  5. Oscars made their annual nominations at 5:30 am PST today. Here is what I am most surprised about. -Katheryn Bigelow, Ben Affleck, and Tarrantino did not get a nominations for Best Director. Its very rare that a movie wins best picture without the director getting a nomination in this category. So I'm moving my pick for best picture from Zero Dark Thirty to Lincoln. -This is the one snubb I hate the most. Looper (Rian Johnson) doesn't get a nomination for best original screenplay. I thought he deserved one for being original in Hollywood. Coming up with an actual sci-fi/blockbuster that was an original thought. Not a reboot, or adaption. -Surprised that Amour sneaked into best picture past films like The Master & Moonrise Kingdom. That picture is now an automatic for best foreign film.
  6. Same. Part of the reason why I love the book 'Walden' by Henry David Thorreau. Something about living in the wilderness with nobody to bother me sounds nice. Speaking of Into the Wild (which was directed by Sean Penn), anybody see the pictures of Penn showing up at the Gangster Squad premiere? He's turning into Mike Shannahan! Dude doesn't even care. Everybody else shows up in suits/dresses and it looks like he strolled in off the streets (also rocking a pony tail).
  7. Chained (2012). Vincent D'Onofrio becomes one of those guys he is trying to catch in Law and Order. Great performance by him (like always). Directed by Jennifer Lynch - yes, David Lynch's daughter. Its a thriller/horror with a twist. Good flick. But again, not something to watch with a lady friend. D'Onofrio never gets the credit he deserves.
  8. That's funny that he reminded you of Alpha Dog the whole time. For me, I kept thinking 'Into the Wild'. As for the chicken wing scene. I had to rewind to see if he made the switch to the real thing (instead of the chicken wing) just because of the way he was acting towards the end. But nope, Chicken wing all the way. Loved McConaughey in that role. But I am also a fan of Haden Church. Those two made the movie fun.
  9. Just got done with Killer Joe It was dysfunctional crooked, and at times demented.......and I liked it! Not something I would watch with a lady friend (or my wife). Lots of bush/violence/strange sexual tension. Matthew McConaughey sometimes gets these roles that just makes perfect sense. Directed by Friedkin (The Exorcist, French Connection). Liked his use of lighting to really set the atmosphere. The chicken wing scene was quite unique.
  10. That's a interesting title to watch out of the blue. I remember watching it back in 2008 but I don't remember too much about it. I remember it being decent with some cool effects, I gave it a solid 6 on IMDB. I liked the pairing of Jack Black & Mos Def. There is a good new Jack Black movie currently streaming on Netflix. 'Bernie' a dark comedy based on a true story. JB actually got a Golden Globe Nomination for best actor in a comedy/musical. Movie was nicely done.
  11. They probably already mailed the award to him. That's a given for sure. I hope he shows up in character.
  12. Hollywood loves Bigelow. Critics are saying that her direction matched with Chastain's acting was perfect. I haven't seen it yet, but personally I doubt it should win best picture. Its a close race this year. But I think Bigelow's direction gets her the nod. Les Miz is losing hype, Lincoln is story telling. I think Argo will be a force (though I hate the manufactured ending). Life of Pi, The Master and Silver Lining Playbook are wildcards.
  13. Zero Dark Thirty. Is it in a theater near you? It doesn't get the national release until next Friday. My guess is that it wins best picture at the Oscars this year. The Buzz from the critics is strong.
  14. Saw Looper, thought it was really good. Love time travel movies and how they just leave you with soooo many questions, leaving you to think about the film long after its over. But speaking of time travel. If you haven't seen Timecrimes (2007), I highly recommend it. It is foreign film but it has very minimal dialogue (Spanish). Rian Johnson said it was one of the inspirations of Looper. I saw it three years ago and I'm still thinking about it. It is available on Netflix Instant.
  15. Savages - It teetered between having something going and garbage. In the end the garbage was too much to overcome. I really don't know what Stone was thinking with this movie. Were we really suppose to feel for the three main characters? I felt more for Bale's character in American Psycho. Blake Lively and Kitsch were pretty awful (hell, I'll throw Hayek & Travolta in that boat as well). The whole Ménage à trois and bro love was useless. Ending sucked. I almost turned it off in the first five minutes (something I rarely would ever do). In the end, it did keep me entertained.
  16. Ofcourse I had to read this right before I watched Total Recall last night. The special effects were fine. But I got tired of watching Colin Farrell get chased, get caught, get chased, almost get caught, get chased again, get caught. And not that I have anything against Biel & Beckinsale. But you'd think they'd at least get two women who aren't interchangeable with their looks. Half the time, I didn't know who's butt they were trying to show me. And you are wise not to venture down the sadistic movie path. I've seen things, man. I'm usually good for some unique movie calls though. I've been talking up a storm with Pontypool this October. I'm glad you liked it. It was a 'fresh' take on the genre. Nicely shot too. Reminded me of horrified 'Talk Radio'. Speaking of which. If you haven't seen 'Talk Radio (1988)', it is a good flick as well. (Not a horror). Plus it has the 1988 Beetlejuice version of Alec Baldwin in it.
  17. Because 3 was a comedy and threw everything that 1 & 2 were based on out the window.
  18. Mallrats all the way for me! Love that movie. I can watch it over and over again. Then I go Dogma, Clerks 1. Looking forward to Kevin Smith's last (proclaimed) flick. 'Hit Somebody'. Its a hockey movie based off the Warren Zevon song. Too bad 'Goon' probably stole some of its thunder.
  19. I still need to see it, been on my que for a while. But I figure if I like Worlds Greatest Dad and God Bless America, I should like this one as well. I just like how Goldthwait thinks outside of the Hollywood box.
  20. He might very well. Have you seen his movies? Actually, I heard him on one of the movie podcasts I listen too and they couldn't even talk to him about is Police Academy character. It was off limits.
  21. ....and he'll hate you for saying that.
  22. Oh I know. He hates that persona. He figures to gain respect as a director (don't know how you do that when you have characters who shoot babies and have sex with dogs) by separating himself form that character.
  23. What's worse? Shooting a baby in a dream (God Bless America) or Punching a Baby on the campaign trail (The Campaign)? I liked God Bless America as well. I can see why many people didn't. The acting wasn't the best. But it was fun. I really like Bobcat Goldthwait as a director. If you haven't seen it, check out 'Worlds Greatest Dad'. It looks like a cheesy Robin Williams movie but boy is that image wrong. I also hear good things about 'Sleeping Dogs Lie' - I believe it is literally about sleeping w/ Dogs .
  24. Yep. The 'last' season was split into two. Which I don't understand why they just didn't classify them as different seasons. Its not like they are taking a winter break. I love it when a drama series gets to go out on its own terms. Looking forward to the wrap-up.
  25. I was the same way with Hanna. I was hyped for it, but it fell short of expectations. It was good but forgettable. I agree about Hollywood films. The current mold is to reboot and remake. Even when Hollywood does come up with an original idea it is often predictable. That is why I enjoy more smaller budget independent films nowadays. A lot of these films have a fresh take in the industry.
