Maybe. Gostkowski's deal, which is pretty standard, had a year 1 cap hit of $3.6M. Ravens could easily structure the deal with a $4.5M/year average that only has a maybe $3M cap hit, meaning we'd free up about $1.5M against the current year cap from the franchise tag amount. Nothing major of course, but if we needed like $1-1.5M in cap for some reason, signing him to an extension is an easy way to do it. True, they could do that, just might and probably will. I prefer to call it the old "kick the can down the road to dead money oblivion" brand of doing business. Then, sit back and watch some good, well-loved players waltz out the front door, since we can't afford to keep them, because of....you guessed it, dead money/cap constraints. Then we go shopping for some old washed up (cheap) free agents to "fill some holes". Don't you just love it?

Not really true. Signing bonuses are counted against the cap, sooner or later. That cannot be avoided. Regardless of how a team decides to allocate it, it matters, hence the term "dead money". I get the point you were trying to make, though.

when you're picking in the back of the 1st round all the time. your picks tend to be 50/50.. On your case about Matt Elam, the whole 2013 draft class was pretty bad and we took him with the 32nd pick, not the 6th or 18th. the only people we missed in that class was Darius Slay or Le'Von bell.. but at that point in time. we had emerging Jimmy Smith with a healthy Webb and had Ray Rice carrying the rock. no one can predict future. but your post tends to lead that way. Since Harbaugh and Oz has been paired our 1st round picks have been 08 Flacco, 09 Oher, 11 jimmy smith, 13 Elam, 14 Mosley, 15 Perriman. Let see 4 of those guys are starting (1 for another team). One missed his rookie year and one didn't do a good job. But yeah we have been missing a lot in the first round according to you. Take a look at the 2012 Draft which we traded out of the 1st round. We picked Sergio Kindle, Terrence Cody, David Reed, Jah Reid, Tandon Doss,Chykie Brown,Anthony Allen. How many of those are on the team? 2013 Draft- Matt Elam, Arthur Brown, Gino Gradkowsk, Christian Thompson, Asa Jackson,Tommy Streeter, John Simon, Aaron Malette, Marc Anthony where are they now? The best player from the 2013 Draft has been Brandon Williams our 3rd round pick. My point was we can't keeping whiffing on our picks. Period. 2015 Draft was pretty good except for Perriman which remains to be seen. I thought we built our team from the draft? Could be wrong? PS- If we are not building from the Draft and we sure as hell don't have money to go shopping during Free Agency what do you suggest? We build from Draft it's the only way to get good players cheap. How do the Steelers constantly draft good WR and we can't even draft 1? Maybe Perriman is that guy? I sure as hell hope so and I know it is something I would love to see him do against the Steelers! He is not due $28 million. And I agree w/a few other posters....maybe keep him at that cap number. Re-writing yet another contract simply makes life a bit better in the short term. In a few years, we'll be having the same old conversations about the cap hit w/him yet again. Sooner or later, you have to pay the piper. The old "kick the can down the road" approach. Past history mostly. He's one of the guys going around saying guys we should sign as FAs despite the fact that those guys aren't actually going to be FAs. We've discussed this at nauseum. If fans are expecting us to significantly upgrade WR via FA this offseason then disappointment should be expected. When guys like Travis Benjamin and Reuben Randle and among the best WRs available on the market, you know it's a bad market. And it's not like there's much expectation of quality WRs getting cut either. Can you define for us mere mortal fans what "at nauseum" is?

Yes, he needs a good defense. He just doesn't need a Broncos levelvet defense. We already know he doesn't because he's proven he can win without one, considering he hasn't had a Broncos level defense in his entire career. Flacco at his worst is still significantly better than what we all saw from Manning this year. Too bad facts and stats don't back you up on that.

will hill is a top ten safety in the league. the question mark is webb and if he can make a smooth transition to safety. Here's to hoping Webb can stay healthy, too.....

I seem to remember how disappointed Davis was that he was drafted that late. I also remember how happy the Ravens were to get him that late, that he was "still available". I guess time will tell just how much he wants it. C'mon Carl, prove them all wrong! Best of luck to you and I hope you do just that in the coming seasons.

From what we saw of Aiken last season, I think he's worth a second round tender, that is, if we can afford it under the cap.
