  1. That's the ~$80 million question.  I know they want Lebron, but that's probably not going to happen.

The West is certainly deeper, but I don't think there's a truly dominant team.  I wouldn't put anything past Kobe in the playoffs, if he has enough help.

Even without a truly dominant team, the Lakers are so far off the pace, they can't compete with the top guns. It's highly unlikely Kobe will get that help either. This article breaks down the contract fallout perfectly.

Excerpts like these say it all:

Making Bryant the highest-paid player in the NBA over the next two seasons is, objectively, not a smart thing.

The deal also kills the Lakers' dreamy goals of bringing two max-level stars to team with Bryant this summer. The Lakers could have, at most, about $21.5 million in cap space this summer if they retain Steve Nash's full salary. And even that figure assumes the following:

    • L.A. renounces its rights to Pau Gasol, and does not re-sign him;

    • The Lakers pick around no. 14 or no. 15 in the draft;

    • The Lakers sign zero other players before luring Star Player X in free agency, so that the empty remaining roster spots carry minimum charges of only about $500,000 each.

Again: The deal makes sense in its own way, and it’s only a two-year extension. The Lakers will have an honest chance at unrestricted free agents that crop up after 2015-16, a group that could include Roy Hibbert, Brook Lopez, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Kevin Love, a long-rumored Laker (and Knick) free-agent target. But Love can opt out of his deal after next season (KAAAHHNNNNN!!!!!!!), and the new CBA makes it so that players should enter free agency at the first possible moment in order to secure a max-level long-term deal right away — before injury, a new and more restrictive CBA, or some other variable can pop up. In that scenario, Love would hit the open market in the summer of 2015, with Bryant still clogging up the Lakers' books. Hibbert and Lopez can do the same if they decline their own player options. The Lakers will have a hard time signing any big free agents that summer, especially if they give out even one big-money multi-year deal in the interim (i.e., this summer) to Gasol or someone else.

The Celtics are now the envy of every front-office executive who craves a rebuilding challenge, provided the challenge comes with some nice resources. The Lakers are an expensive mediocrity overpaying a franchise star in decline.

  2. If it's the right player they might be alright, assuming they get decent enough role players.  The teams they won with a few years ago weren't that much worse than the current NBA elites.

Who would be right player even be? I don't know about you second statement but overall, the West is most definitely deeper than several years ago. Tons of variables but I just don't see the Lakers being relevant unless a lot goes their way.

  3. Kobe's going to be a Laker for the rest of his career.  Seems a bit premature, I would have waited until after he comes back to make sure he can still play after the injury.  I wonder what the numbers are, the Lakers are going to have problems when they start trying to spend money if Kobe is taking up $30 million in cap space again.

They've got enough space for another max contract but they clearly need a lot more than just one other superstar to compete in the West, much less make a title run.

  4. playign extremely well, still question your squad to keep it going though.

Understandable but it the team's form is pretty impressive when you consider all the injuries they've dealt wiith. If the squad can stay relatively healthy until Cazorla, Walcott, Podolski and Oxlaide-Chamberlain return and Wenger makes a signing or two in January, I doubt there will be a serious collapse.

  5. If he goes down though do you even have anymore strikers?

As Ray said, Walcott can play up front, there's Yaya Sanogo, as well Bendtner. I'm not going to pretend the team doesn't lack striking depth but there are options.

If Flamini keeps playing like he did against Tottenham, I can't see Wenger buying a defensive minded player, especially if Vermaelen comes back strong, although he is injury prone. I can see a striker, would have liked Ba, but Mou is not selling to rivals

Walcott would probably play CF with Özil and Cazorla on the flanks

Agreed. I'm hopeful on a young DM being signed in January but like you said, with Flamini in the fold, I doubt one gets signed. While I love his game, I don't want to expect Vermaelen. Even when he's played over the past couple seasons, his play has been inconsistent.

  6. I had to look up to be sure, but I did see Ironclad.  Ironclad has more star power (and Kate Mara) but I think I enjoyed Solomon Kane more because of the 'darker' aspect of it.  But I probably enjoyed Black Death the most between those three Netflix Streaming films.

    Love me some Kate Mara.

I enjoyed Black Death the most as well. Gripping film.

  7. Ozil is a great signing, just duno who's going to score the goals

Giroud is off to a fine start. Regardless, the team doesn't need a 30-goal striker. They didn't have one last season and only United and Chelsea scored more goals.

I'm so happy at the moment :D

Still would have liked a Striker and DM/CB, but Ozil may be the signing of the summer

Agreed. Hopefully, a striker and DM and/or CB are secured in January. I downplayed the return of Flamini before but he could actually be a positive signing.

  8. Solomon Kane (2009) - Streaming on Netflix

This film had trouble finding a US distributor (limited theater release in 2012) but has found its way onto Netflix streaming recently.   It's nothing ground-breaking.  Good vs. Evil set in Medieval times.

But if you like over-the-top action movies set in medieval times (Season of the Witch, In the Name of the King, Black Death), its not a bad flick to stream.  It'll keep you entertained.  But don't expect much more.  James Purejoy does do a nice acting job as Solomon Kane.

Saw that (along with Black Death) several months ago. Both were pretty good. Another quality Purefoy flick is Ironclad

  9. Jesus but utd have been awful. Wasn't sure on moyes at all, think my doubts will be proved correct

The lack of transfer activity has been an issue but it's early days.

On another note, it's been a positive couple days for Arsenal. Beat Tottenham and Ozil looks to be on the way. Signing Ba on loan would be amazing but I'll be surprised if that goes through at this stage.

  10. Rambo's playing great at the moment, he had great games at the end of last year and carried it over to this year. I agree that, at the moment, Ramsey is way better than Jack, he may very well be our best player right now, but IMO Wilshere has so much upside he was just phenomenal/brilliant what ever you want to call it before his injury. It will take some time to get back to 100% especially suffering an ankle injury, but I am hopeful Wilshere returns to form

And I've read that the Spurs agreed a, hold on, 11m fee for Eriksen... really? 11m? Eriksen is worth so much more. I'd be pissed if Tottenham snatches him up

Agreed Ramsey's current form and Wilshere going forward.

Spurs certainly got a bargain for Eriksen. Not that Arsenal needed to spend the kind of money Tottenham has splashed this summer but again, it's just sad that they can land a gifted play-maker in Eriksen this late while Wenger re-signs Mathieu Flamini. At best, I see tomorrow's game being a 2-2 draw.
