Except Joe did rise to the occassion in the 4th quarter. He threw the pass that could have, should have, and needed to be caught. And it wasn't. He threw it multiple times this fourth quarter, in fact. And he did it LAST WEEK, too. Now that's not an excuse for why the offense sleepwalks through the rest of the game, but on the do-or-die 4th quarter win-or-lose drive, Flacco is the guy delivering, while his teammates drop the ball (literally).
Unbelievable to me how much of the discussion is on blaming Flacco for everything, when the play designs & calls are not working, he has no choice but to throw it short of the sticks because nobody is open beyond the sticks and he has no time for a play to develop. He completes two thirds to 70% of his passes, with a handful of drops every game (KEY drops on HUGE plays at that!) while being constantly under duress, hurried, under pressure, getting hit all the time, and the complaints are all about his accuracy? Curious. He looks pretty accurate to me with a couple of throws per game being out of reach of our receivers. We are now in the business of demanding perfection on every snap from Joe? Good luck with that from ANY QB in the game. Everybody misses a throw here and there, Flacco's misses are just being unfairly magnified by fans who are unhappy with the offense as a whole. Most of his misses are a result of pressure or tight coverage anyway.
Today, I saw a lot of people complain about a pass that was low and away and bounced off the ground. But if he threw it where the receiver could catch it, there was a defender in the area who probably would have INTERCEPTED it instead. That one in particular might as well just be a throwaway to avoid a sack, because that was never getting completed anyway. I do remember two passes today that went over the heads of the receiver. On 50 dropbacks, 2 passes were obviously overthrown that I can recall. And that's supposed to convince me that Flacco needs to be benched, when he completes two thirds of his pass attempts and had 3 or 4 really major drops on key plays that would have given us big points had the receiver done their part today? Because when you're throwing over a pass rush in your face you aren't supposed to ever loft one that might end up out of reach of the receiver? It's actually really common.
What's uncommon is how often Joe is pressured, how little of a pocket he's getting to step into, and how tight the windows are on his receivers. I watched a little bit of the Patriots game today and Tom Brady had all freakin' day back in the pocket today and was throwing to receivers who didn't have a single defender within 5 yards of them in any direction at the time the ball got into them, then they would make tons of yards after the catch, often breaking tackles. I don't know how he gets all that help, but he does. Joe needs pass protection, he needs the guy catching the ball underneath the coverage to make a play after he catches the ball, he needs the guys down the field to catch the ball when he puts it where they can reach it, and he's way too often not getting one, two, or all three of those things (sometimes on the same play).
I'm just saying, Joe Flacco is being put in a position to lose on a bad offense with bad play-calling, but he's doing about as much as you can ask a QB to do if you ask me. He's putting the ball where it can be caught at least 80% of the time when you consider drops. If that's inaccurate, I don't know what to tell you. He's being judged completely unfairly and without regard for context and what's really happening if you ask me.
Thank you ??
cj mosly is a moron
No he isn't, this one mistake doesn't make him a moron..... He has had 2 intercepts before today, one a game winning intercept. Put the blame where it belongs in this game, offensive play calling and our suddenly way below average special teams.
So very sad, but we fans could see this coming..... Best wishes Justin, to you and your family wherever go and whatever you do. Thank you for the 2 great years you gave us, we will keep you in our hearts always. ???
Joe had a flea flicker and missed a wide open WR but I guess that's Trestman fault! All they had to do is get a 1st down and Joe didn't get it done PERIOD!
Interesting how you neglected to mention that Mack was busy steamrolling Joe while he was trying to get the ball out, due to the absolute crap job by our OL
So if the pocket is collapsing why doesn't Joe slide up to a open spot or move the pocket like I see Big Ben and Andy Dalton do?! They move around extend the play to get results and the O line did good enough to get the run game going so why can't Joe run a flea flicker and miss an open WR?! I am losing confidence in Joe and he needs to step his game up because teams will always rush the edges and if he doesn't keep his head on a swivel teams will continue to get behind him and cause more sacks and fumbles!
You do realize Joe is coming off of major knee surgery less than a year ago, and is dragging around a cumbersome knee brace on his 6'6" frame, right? How mobile do you expect him to be, when he is a pretty big guy to begin with? He got hit pretty good in the ribs yesterday early, not to mention getting hit or chased the majority of the game, he NEEDS BETTER PROTECTION, period.
Steve Smith is right. Last year, we lost to these kinds of teams. If there is any playoff hope, we MUST beat them because from where I am sitting, I don't see us beating Pittsburgh, New England, or Philadelphia. That is 5 losses right there. Cincinnati is no slouch either, so it may be 7. If our offense was doing anything, we would be competitive. So far, they have done nothing. Can't run, can't block, can't throw down field, can't make 1 yard on third down. The list goes on. Without our one true Pro All Pro, Justin Tucker, we would not have won these games. Yeah, we are 3-0, but the big boys are coming soon. Perriman stinks. He is to our offense what Elam is to our defense. Both wasted number one picks.
Your wrong about what we can't beat. I can see us beating Philadelphia, and even split with Pittsburgh or even sweep. The Bengals can be a split or they can sweep us but l think we will beat them this time at home. It's too early to tell how good this this team could get and l believe they will be better during the middle the season. Let it gel.
Exactly what I was going to say..... Our Ravens can beat any team on any given day, and have already proven they can beat teams like Pittsburgh and Patriots, the only team that scares me a little right now is the Eagles because of their fast start. But we don't play them till the end of the season, and we will know by then where the Eagles will be sitting. We do however need to get the offense going a whole lot better.....
And great article once again Kevin ???
Just too funny ???
Best owner in the league, without a doubt...... R.I.P. Coach Brooks, you will be missed always ....
After reading this article, I lost a WHOLE lot of respect for K.O., he has NOTHING to be mad or have "hurt feelings" about, it was his decision to sign elsewhere for stupid, crazy money, but just my opinion.
Like Steve Smith's fire but wish he would play and shut his mouth. Been with us for several seasons and hasn't made a major impact....drops too many balls.
Really? No impact what-so-ever? And drops too many balls? I like his fire, and I also like that he HAS impacted our offense for the better. I don't know what you are watching, but I am watching a future HOFer. ??
An ugly win is still better than a pretty loss..... ????
Great article Kevin, as usual you hit the very heart of the matter, and your ability to convey the enormous amount of eternal love, and admiration for Coach Brooks is amazing...... He will be so missed by so many..... ??
I have to say, the Ravens couldn't have picked a better bakery than this for their cakes. Many of my friends and I have gotten cakes from Snickerdoodles for many years, (living nearby to the bakery is an extra bonus ?) and they are outstanding ???
A little rocky at first, but well done in the end, and I do believe Coach Brooks is smiling down for sure ????
That headline pic says it all. Our defense started playing well right when Matt Judon got on the field. He should have started from the geicko, and I am so done with forsett as our RB. He runs so predictable and soft. All it takes is one defender to put him on the ground. Unless their is a big gaping hole Forsett has to run through he is garbage. Just start West.
I think Justin Forsett is far from garbage, he is coming back from serious injury, and with 2 rookies on the O line, they need to open up more lanes for all our RBs. The running game will come, this is also a work in progress.
Just wow..... Do not panic, do not blink, and do not give up, just take a deep breath...... What an epic comeback and win from our entire group of never-say-never men in Purple and Black, still a work-in-progress, but I will definitely take this win ????
Oh no, I am so heart broken for his family, and his Raven's family. I have been wondering how he was doing....... He was a dedicated coach, and I am sure all players he coached are much better players, and men...... Prayers to all ??
Loved seeing Dennis on the field again, and making an awesome catch like he always has in the past, I just hold my breath now ??
Oh, and seeing those awesome first catches by Perriman and Pitta was priceless, along with that 66 yd passing TD to Wallace ?
Yes, they still are evolving and need to work on things as the season goes along, but it was a good tight defensive win, and I will definitely take it...... They needed to get this opening day loss record monkey off their backs and they did. I am optimistic about many things, both defense and offense ???
I think us fans will be just as nervous and emotional watching him on the field of play for the first time in 2 years, I just pray he stays safe out there ??
With Flacco history of not getting injured up until last year, any QB given the opportunity to start for another team is going to jump, and it worked out for Tyrod, and i am very happy for him......More upset that Ed is over there, and not here......:)
I agree with you, especially your comment about Ed Reed, but it does make me feel a bit better that he is working under his mentor in Rex Ryan ??
I still wish Tyrod all the best in the world, just not against us ???
Yep, speaking for myself, I still need that occasional reminder to "Stay Calm, and Trust Ozzie"...... BTW, is there a t-shirt I can buy that has this on it, lol ??! ????
Why didn't they wait until after the first game to sign him. At least that way they didn't have to guarantee his salary right? Very curious move signing a 33 yr old returner whose very job is to be fast. The first thing that goes away with age as far as I can tell is speed. So, clearly he outperformed expectations in his work out.
I agree somewhat with you, however, about the old age and loss of speed comment, I wouldn't say that too loud to Smith Sr., lol, he has a different idea on that ??

I hate to see anyone ever get fired, and I am sure Marc Trestman is a good man, however, this is the first time I have EVER really leaned more toward replacing a coach a.s.a.p. ......... Our offense has completely tanked, and that can't all be on Joe, or the rest of the offense. Joe is in his 9th year, and I don't have to run through all of his and our offenses successes in that time, and yes, Joe is coming off of complete re-construction of his knee so that does factor in here a bit. I am always afraid of the old line of "the grass is always greener on the other side, until you get there", but in this case, I don't know if things can actually get worse than they already are. People always complained terribly about Cam Cameron, but he at least had the Ravens scoring TDs, and was in the playoffs every year he was our OC, and I absolutely think he should get most of the credit for getting our offense to the SB.
Ok, rant over, and let's move on to the next chapter...... Go Ravens ???
