the first college coach has coem out to interview with ravens
Per source, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has interviewed UCF OC Charlie Taaffe. http://bit.ly/14IQx2Y
I had a feeling the ravens were going to interview him . I watch a video of him not too long ago
I agree with you. Lee does play a lot like Torrey. Almost the same player.
I dont know about the Torrey Smith comparison but when I look at Lee he reminds me of Derrick Mason .
He is, no doubt, but physically, Torrey and Brown are equal. The Steelers utilize Brown's speed the same way we should utilize Torrey's speed. Brown gets a lot of quick slants, screens, and hitches, but Torrey doesn't.
I agree Torrey should be use in same fashion as Brown but Brown in my opinion is a pretty good route runner and he seems to be better at beating press man coverage than Torrey but it may not be fair to compare them because one being use correctly more than the other. I hope the new offensive coordinator definitely use Torrey in the same fashion as Brown
My first pick is still Shanahan.
What are everyone's thoughts on Kirby Wilson? I feel like he's gotten a lot out of the poor RBs they've had paired with a tremendously bad line. Their RBs are also well coached.
He's definitely interesting but I have no idea what kind of offense he would run.
I really hope Shanahan gets the job.
I hope it is him to and it would make alot of sense especially when you can add Gary Kubiak as the qb coach then former texans running back coach chick harris.
Kyle would still be my guy. I found it interesting that Harbs said once we select a OC we'll build the coaching stafff around him. One of my biggest concerns was bringing a new OC and force him to work with what he is given instead allowing him to built his offense.
I was surprised when I saw that especially considering that some of the offensive staff members were at the senior bowl evaluating talent.
Ex Rams head coach Scott Linehan interviewed for the job today. He had been on the Lions offensive staff for the past five years.
I heard he was a good offensive coordinator but i don't like the fact that he runs a air corydell offense.
Just saying, Derrick Mason gave his endorsement of Hostler today on WNST, for what that's worth. Mason endorsed him and it's well known that he's well-liked by the players, especially Torrey. Who knows? It might be good to have a player friendly coach after control freak Cam and the not-fiery Caldwell.
Thats cool . Derrick Mason had a good relationship with Jim Hostler they probably were friends and if thats the case then its understandable why he would endorse him . I like how he said Hostler coaching help him out alot when he thought that he was at the stage of his career when it seem like theres was nothing else to learn.
Theres really nothing with having a player friendly coach and I think players respond better to coaches they like but at the same time it doesn't make you a better play caller or equal success. I'm sure there have been offensive coordinators or defensive coordinator that were loved by their players but just weren't good at calling plays.
I think you're off the mark. When you're 6'5'' 220lbs you don't need to get separation. Look at what Vincent Jackson does. Check out his highlights. VJax isn't that fast, he's not a burner or a masterful route runner and still he's led the league in 1st down percentage for nearly 5 years in a row. Last year he was #2 behind Calvin Johnson, the year before that #1, year before that #1, before that he was injured, year before that #1. Vjax isn't gonna burn you but he is going to outfight you for the football. He's always going to win the jump ball battle. Mike Evans is vjax 2.0. One of Evans biggest strengths is facing press overage. He simply over powers at the point of attack and uses his physicality to gain quick separation on slants. If this guy is one of the WR that's on your radar, go back and watch his games again and notice how many quick slants and jump balls he catches. Not just that but the separation he gets at the line.
Think of a bigger, faster Anquan Boldin
Im not saying Mike Evans needs to be a masterful route runner to gain separation or to be good but height and size isnt everything and if it was guys like Jonathan Baldwin, Stephen Hill, Brian Quick and etc would have been great receivers by now. Vincent Jackson was even a raw receiver and didn't start making a name for him self until his fourth year. Mike Evans indeed shows things that we alll may like but at the end of the day I see a receiver whom dominated against weaker cornerbacks and struggled against more physical cornerbacks which showed when he went up against cornerbacks from Lsu and Missouri . I would have loved to see how he would faired against more talented/better cornerbacks but he really didn't last year .
Please, they gave him a real OC with a real offensive philosophy and he actually started growing.
If Flacco is this good now imagine how he would be with a real oc that he can actually grow alot with.
Mike Evans is a guy who presents a mismatch problem and a huge catch radius. Imo, he has the best hands in this draft class and has the physical strength to overpower anyone lined up in front of him. He's a guy Joe can throw a jump ball to knowing he'll come down with it every time. Now, what's one of the biggest things we struggled with this year? SCORING IN THE REDZONE! Mike Evans, if nothing else, is a pure Redzone Nightmare. Imagine being inside the opponents 10 yard line with a 5'10'' 190lb cb 1-on-1 with a 6'5'' 220lb WR who has an insane vertical jump and hands that catch everything. There's no other WR in this draft that catches the ball better at its highest point than Mike Evans does. Even when he's covered - at 6'5'' with a 39'' vertical - he's never covered. He's the reason Johnny Football gets so much hype. Watch his games against Alamaba and Auburn this year if you're not familiar with him.
I heard so much about this guy but when i watched him play i saw a guy whom struggled against physical cornerbacks, he's not a good route runner, probably should have stayed in school to work on his craft, yes he can be physical but it seem like when the opposing cornerback is just as physical he will try stunts like pushing the cornerback down which is a penalty in the nfl, he has deceptive speed but he may have a hard time gaining separation in the nfl atleast in his rookie year, and he overall pretty raw . I think there are some risk in drafting Mike Evans in the first round because he's raw but The Ravens will have to have full faith in their receiver coach to help bring this kid up(Ozzie called him the one of the best receiver coach).
Bill Belichick failed at his first try at HC too. I'm not saying we should hire Hostler, just that he us a qualified in-house candidate.
\
you make a good point but Jim Hostler also was helping Jim Caldwell with the offensive game plans last year. Hes the receiver coach and he should know his receivers alot more than any body but yet he contribute to the mess we had on offense and lack of usage of using our receivers to their strength.
I can't stand how he acted at the end of his tenure with the Redskins. He was unprofessional and ignorant. I haven't liked him since his Denver days, and he has also caused me to hate his sidekick for a son.
overall you dont like Mike Shanahan but maybe you should realize that his son is different from him.
If we get Shanny I will be so mad. I can't stand that man.
sounds like the perfect guy for the job
I don't like Hostler for OC but to be fair, what has the FO given him in terms of receivers? None in the first round, and only Torrey in the first two. The rest have been projects.
The Ravens drafted Smith in the second round, Doss in the fourth round( he was considered a second round pick before his injury ) David Reed in fifth round , Tommy Streeter in sixth round and Aaron Mellete in seventh round. In my opinion Streeter and Mellete are/were the projects but some reason or another Doss or Reed didn't reach the expectation of the coaches.
When the Ravens traded Boldin they had to believe that one or two of their young receivers were going to step their game up along with Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones . I think you can basically say that Ozzie and a John challenge Hostler because they had high expectation for Doss, Reed (when he was here),Thompson,, Williams(when he was here), and Streeter(when he was here) to fill in that number 3 spot but none them really step up . I know Reed and Thompson was dealing with some injuries but through out training camp none of the young receivers step up which led to them signing Stokley . I know some of that can be the fault of the players but it also has to be the fault of the coach as well and I think Hostler would have lost the challenge or maybe his job if Marlon Brown didnt play the way he did last season.
Torrey Smith did reach the 1,000 receiving yard mark but he only had 4 touchdowns and caught 47% of his passes. He even had his moments when he had trouble getting open against low level cornerbacks that were using press man coverage also having trouble locating the deep baller. I think some of that can be on Torrey but Hostler has to take blame for that. Overall I think a new offensive coordinator like Gary Kubiak or any other offensive coordintor that brings something totally new to the offense should help the receivers alot but it also will be up to Hostler to get these guys up to speed especially if the ravens run a west coast offense in which consist of timed routes and consistently require receivers to on the same page with the quarterback alot more than our previous offensive system. Oh yeah well Hostler may just be offensive coordintor and wont have to worry about none of this ![]()
Just realized, say we keep Jacoby and Vonta, how do you think they would feel about working with Kubiak? Think he would be an alright hire, but would prefer Kyle Shanahan. Feel he's more imaginative.
Leach already shown his endorsement for Kubiak as the Ravens offensive coordinator but i have no idea how Jones would feel about it . I like Kyle Shanahan as well and The Ravens could probably hired both Kubiak and Kyle but have one as the offensive coorindinator and the other as the quarterback coach . I think that would be a great move for the Ravens and either one in my opinion should help the offense in a positive way.
I agree with that, but do you think we had a good team not great just a GOOD TEAM,I think if our off was up to par we should have been in the playoffs,
I think we had a good team and to lose some many key players but still be in the playoff hunt is impressive to me . The offense just wasn't good enough last year but i i expect it to be much better next season.
I would not totally dismiss it and let me be CLEAR,I am not saying he is turning us into the eagles, and it has been talk of brad childress being available, he comes from the andy reid coaching tree and we all know how andy was and is loyal to his coaches.TO THE END.we used to be aggressive just look at our coaches and players.where is our fire. T.sizzle well the writing is on the wall with that extension.he will either agree to terms or be gone
Of course theres been talk about Brad Childress being a optiion because of the history him and Harbaugh had but honestly thats just reporters making a educated guess. I think i could have came up with that on my own but it doesn't mean it will happen and it hasn't happen atleast not now. I thnk our aggression and fire was still there last year it may not have been as as strong like it was in 2012 but what the Ravens went through is really not nothing other teams haven't been through after winning a super bowl.
so based on what alot of people here wrote,NORV will not fit with this zbs of ours.for what it is worth I did want NORV ,peyton had his OC for years the steelers have their dc ah forever.Norv will not get another head coaching job for a long time.He is proven and he would have been here.We will end up will brad childress cause harbs want to tuen the BALTIMORE RAVENS into the eagles,we used to be aggressive we used to fierce teams were afraid to play us,that is or at least was our identity
The last time i check the ravens haven't interviewed Childress at all or shown any interest. I think the idea that Harbaugh wants the Ravens to be like eagles is pretty overrated.
I hope it went well, he's my pick.
I look around the internet about him i hope the rumors about him being a control freak isnt true but overall i think he would be a nice offensive coordintor for The Ravens.
Kubiak's playbook has only the play-action pass in it. That's it.
Come on that can't be totally true and honestly whats wrong with play action when you have one of the best running backs in the league. I know you like Norv but overall he's really no different from Cam Cameron it will basically be the same offense just with some wrinkles . Fans will still be screaming out wheres the slants and short passes ,Torrey Smith/other receiver will still be running deep as usual, there will still be more isolation routes as usual, and Flacco won't be giving more control of the offense( Rivers definitely didn't when Norv was the offensive coordinator ),.
Overall if the Ravens do hired Norv thats cool but I think its time to move away from the Air Corydell
Because he seems inept to in-game adjustments. His playcalling is extremely conservative and at times very predictable. If you think Cam was vanilla, then watch Kubes playcalling. Flacco's biggest attribute is his arm strength. Norv can put that to use in his playcalling.
Kubes would destroy that attribute. I know Schaub has a noodlearm, but I know Houston fans have been calling for Kubes head for years. And I watched them a lot since I have a lot of friends that are Texans fans.
Funny cause what you said about Kubiak is the samething that has been said about Norv. I"m pretty tired of Flacco been labeled as a quarterback that can only throw it deep and honestly just because Kubiak runs a west coast offense doesn't mean he wont be able to take advantage of Flacco so called biggest attributes aka his arm strength.
When Norv was the head coach of the chargers there were fans calling for his head and best believe they didnt care too much about his play calling either.
Did you see Kubiak's "predictable" offense win three Superbowls in Denver? I didn't because I was barely born, but you might have.
Kubiak didnt call the plays in denver but he still gets the credit regardless.
I want receiver that is crafty route runner, plays aggressive, try to get open no matter what, that's consistently on the same page with the quarterback, fight for the ball and eventually catches it,a solid blocker, and a leader . The ravens haven't had that since Mason and receiver doesn't have to 6'3" or 6'5" to have these traits

If Hostler is the offensive coordinator then expect the same ol playing calling we saw last year basically boring and predictable. I would seriously be disappointed in Harbaugh if he makes Hostler the offensive coordinator maybe even forget about watching them play next year. I think it says alot when Caldwell didnt even request to intreview Jim Hostler for his team offensive coordinator vacancy. Jim Caldwell litterally worked with Hostler for most of the season last year developing offensive game plans and he showed no interest in Hostler at all as a offensive coordinator .
