  1. Demaryius Thomas was called boom or bust too and he didn't go until the 20's because of it. People said the same stuff, he has concentration drops, his routes are sloppy.. teams saw what kind of talent he had coming out but just couldn't pull the trigger in the top 20 because there were "safer" players available. Thomas cleaned up his routes big time with NFL coaching, he still has concentration drops every once in a while but that doesn't prevent him from being a top 3 WR in the entire NFL.

Perriman reminds me of Thomas in a lot of ways, teams in the top 20 just couldn't pull the trigger on Perriman either for similar reasons, there were "safer" players still available. I commend our FO for having the cahones to not get scared off by the doubts and pass on a potential superstar because he wasn't "safe" enough. As much as I hate to admit it, I think the Ravens and Steelers both made out like bandits in that 1st round. We got our long term answer to AJ Green and Antonio Brown and the Steelers got a dynamic pass rusher who instantly improves their defense. I expect Perriman, Maxx Williams, and Dupree to have their finger prints all over those rivalry games next year.

  2. Za'Darius Smith really isn't that far off from Bud Dupree froma production stand point, Smith had 6 sacks in 2013 and Dupree's big season last year he had 7.5 sacks. I think Dupree is more fast twitch and better at speed rushing and getting sacks but Smith is better at collapsing the pocket and using his size and strength to control the line of scrimmage.

Dupree is definitely the better prospect and projects as a 34 OLB but we got good value on Smith in the 4th. The scheme fit is a bit concerning, I'm assuming he will be a 34 DE, but the kid plays like a Raven, should be a solid contributor in the rotation.

  3. Just read through Demaryius Thomas' draft profile, listen to this, sounds exactly like Perriman's scouting report. To all the people concerned about the concentration drops, it was Demaryius' biggest knock coming out of college too.

"He can make acrobatic type catches but will drop some very catchable passes due to lapses in concentration, possesses elite size and physicality for the receiver position, has good top-end speed, consistently catches ball away from his body, runs sloppy routes and is raw with his route-running in general, needs to be more consistent with his concentration on the ball.".

(Go read Odell Beckham's scouting report, also had a noted weakness as concentration drops)

  4. What I really like about this pick is Davis is an absolute beast when he isn't fatigued and playing a high percentage of snaps where he seems to fade. With our DL rotation we can keep him fresh and get the most out of him while he's on the field. This is a talented kid who needed an established locker room to reign him in and set the bar high for his effort on the field. This is definitely that ideal fit for him from that stand point.

I think Davis is a competitive guy and he will raise his focus and effort because that's the standard he will be held to by his coaches and teammates here.

  5. Love the pick. Can we please work on CB and Pass Rush now....PLEASE!

I mean we wanted Peters in the 1st and KC shocked a lot of people and took him, first wave of corners was gone at 26 (Unless you count Byron Jones which I don't). In the 2nd we had a no brainer trading up to take Maxx Williams just great value, fit for our team, and fit the biggest position of need. In the 3rd guys like Rollins, PJ Williams, Carter didn't make it to us and we picked the BPA.

Just the way the board has fallen I guess. I really wanted a corner early too but we had to take what the board gave us.

  6.  We got a playmaker at TE, he may never be Gronk or Graham but I do see him being in the next tier down like Olsen, Witten, Vernon Davis type but it may take him a few years to progress to that point. This offense needed a spark after losing Torrey and Daniels and it just got 2 sticks of dynamite instead. Big, athletic, fast, mismatch creating weapons for Flacco.

  7. Interesting! I haven't watched it yet but that's interesting to hear. I wonder who he predicted. Maybe Parker?

I'm almost positive his prediction was Peters, him and Dupree were revealed as the 2 other players besides Breshad we were targeting when KC went on the clock and not many expected a team in the top 20 to take Peters so Eric probably thought he would be there at 26.

  8. Some you guy need to go refresh your memory and watch Torrey at Maryland. In so many situations he used his body to help cradle the ball in. Perriman actually extends his arms and plucks the ball out of the air. They asked Perriman about his hands and he said he felt like it was a strength and not a weakness, just a matter of concentration and not trying to run before the catch is actually made.

Been watching a lot of college tape to see who he reminds me of looked at Bowe, Gordon, Dez, Andre Johnson, Demaryius, ect... I actually think Breshad hit the nail right on the head, he reminds me most of Julio Jones.

  9. I honestly think he has good hands, it's just a matter of cutting out the concentration drops. If you watch his game tape he catches the ball with his hands, he's not a body catcher, you can tell he's confident in his ability to catch the football and that's the biggest misconception about him right now is that he has "bad hands".

I like what Harbs had to say at the presser because I feel the same way, he's 21 years old, he's a freak athlete, and he's a guy who's on the rise with a really high ceiling.  The fact that he's on the developmental side is the only reason he was even available for us to pick. If Torrey who was a big time body catcher can make the type of progress he did in 4 years here, I'm honestly really excited about what Perriman can accomplish here.

  10. I hope we use him on screens often.

Definitely possible now. We tried it with Torrey and Jacoby but they just weren't built for it. To run good screens you need a very elusive and quick twitch player like an Antonio Brown or you need a big frame guy who can slip tackles and accelerate quickly like an Alshon Jeffery. Torrey and Jacoby didn't have the elusiveness or the frame to shed tackles and get up the field.

Perriman fits that 2nd mold, not that he will necessarily be as good as Alshon but with Trestman you can definitely see him in that role catching bubble screens.

  11. I also look at it like this. The team has plenty of possession receivers with hands. They lacked a big play threat. Why not get Perriman? At the very least, he's a big play guy that the team lacked. At the best, he can become a number one guy for them. He is full of potential

I see it a similar way. Worst case scenario I think he will basically just cancel out Torrey and be a guy who can stretch the field and make some splash plays. At best he's a Josh Gordon type and can be a true #1. It all depends on how hard he's willing to work and how good his mental game is, he has just as much talent and natural ability as any WR in this entire draft.

At 26 I think that is too much upside to ignore, if he's in any sort of space he is breaking the first tackle, he has that Gordon-like frame that allows him to just run right through arm tackles. Usually when WR's have a frame like that they don't have the break away speed to pair with it. That's what makes guys like Gordon and Perriman freaks of nature, guys built like them rarely possess that kind of speed and quickness. Is he 4.27 fast on game day? No, but he can still turn on the jets out run any defender who doesn't have an angle on him.

  12. Crabtree doesn't have a clue and I'm not saying that because he didn't sign here, I fully expected him not to. But if you take a "prove it" deal you gotta put yourself in a position to produce more than you did last year. I like Derek Carr, I think he has a bright future, but that's just not an offense that is going to produce big numbers for a wide out. I mean that's a team that was in garbage time a lot last year and their top wr didn't go over 700 yds. He would be lucky to match his yardage total from his last year with SF that killed his market value.. I just don't see how the Raiders propel his mission to get paid in 2016.

I think Miami was probably the best spot for him, he would be looking at a lot more volume in their offense with Wallace and Clay out of the picture. I mean Wallace was generally considered a failure in Miami and he still put up nearly 1000 yds in 2013 and 10 TD's in 2014. Crabtree's plan was clearly to put up numbers this year so he can cash in next offseason, the guy is chasing the money and I don't blame him for that but Oakland has to be one of the worst teams in the league for a wr looking to stuff the stat sheet even with an emerging Derek Carr.

  13. Wilson is an interesting prospect, and I suppose I see your point about him after trading for Graham, although I'm not sure they would want to part with him because that would give them two good options at TE. Furthermore, Graham isn't the best blocker in the run game, a notorious issue for him. But I can see that. Lewis is also a possibility, and while I do like him, I'm not sure we would take on his contract at all. I'm certain we would look into it if the Jags ate some, which I remember hearing was possible. Still, we'd have to give up a late round pick for him. Not bad, I suppose. I wouldn't do anything until after the draft, personally.

I just don't see them trading Reed, and if he is traded, he has been injury prone so that raises concerns for me with Pitta. He's very talented, though. I'm interested in Green, but perhaps we could trade for Gates, which may make more sense since he's 34 and will soon be 35 and is in the final year of his deal. I think the Chargers may want to keep Green, though, since Gates is as old as he is.

On the subject of Davis, I really get the impression that he will either remain with the club or at the very least, it will take a nice pick to move him...like a 3rd round pick or something. SF keeps emphasizing that he is a big part of their plans, telling me it is either a smokescreen or a reality. Either way, I don't feel good about obtaining him.

I think I would seriously consider a 3rd for Vernon. With Flacco he could enter into that truly elite tier of TE with the likes of Graham and Gronk. I think because of the offensive scheme and the QB's we haven't seen the full extent of what Vernon is capable of. The biggest issue with Vernon is just the uncertainty of him extending, it's a reason for the 49ers to move him but it's also a reason for teams to be be scared off from him if they don't get an extension set with Vernon prior to the trade going through. I know we traded for Monroe in a contract year but if we did have to give up a 3rd for Vernon the stakes are just too high to risk him not re-signing with us after the season.

Getting a 3rd in this year's draft is definitely fair compensation for SF instead of having to wait until 2017 for the potential 3rd they would get via a comp pick if he left at the end of this season. Getting the extension lined up from the start is the biggest hitch in trading for him for us.

  14. Just saw that today we were linked to Crabtree as one of his top 3 suitors along with the Raiders and Dolphins. Typical Ozzie move, don't force the issue and put the ball in Crabtree's court. If he wants to come here at our price then great, if he wants to get more money on a lower tier team it's no skin off our back.

I think we also want to see how the draft plays out, if we don't get a WR early we could likely get Crabtree after May 12th and he won't affect comp picks.

  15. Who could we acquire in a trade though? It's easier said than done. Any ideas for possible targets?

Luke Wilson, Mercedes Lewis, Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Lardarius Green

Not top tier guys with the exception of Vernon but definitely some names in the realm of possibility. Wilson could be expendable for a mid round pick with Jimmy Graham there.. they have another TE in McCoy already, Mercedes Lewis is just treading water at this point in Jacksonville and they could always use more picks to bring in young talent, I think he probably makes the most sense.

Lardarius Green's contract will be up by the time Gates is out of his way so they might prefer to move him for the right price, Davis has been long rumored to be on the trading block, Reed has under-performed big time in Washington and dealt with injuries.. he's kind of a "doghouse" type player and you get the feeling Washington has grown frustrated with him,

  16. I don't really understand why everyone wanted Housler anyway. The Cardinal fans I talked to bashed him for not being able to catch anything, which reminded me of how everyone here talked about Ed Dickson lol. I guess the grass is always greener with the other guy.

I honestly think signing Housler with the notion he would be our TE1 had major potential to back fire. That appeared to be the plan at one point but obviously the negotiations fell through and a deal never materialized. I think the Ed Dickson comparison is valid, Dickson was fast for a TE and had no problem out running LB's down the seam but always had trouble just making the catch. Housler is that same kind of player, he can get open but it's hard for a QB to trust him to make a semi-contested catch on 3rd down or in a big situation at the end of a game.

I think a trade is on the horizon. The odds of us coming out of this draft with a TE1 are extremely low. Gresham is still in play but with the slew of mid round picks we have I think the best way to acquire the quality of TE we need to run this offense effectively is via trade.

    0

  17. Glad we missed out on Housler.. put's the pressure on the FO to get Gresham or trade for a quality TE. I really hope we don't trade up in the 2nd round for Maxx Williams, he's overrated because of how weak this TE class is.. he could be a good TE but he's not worth the early 2nd round price tag. Would rather draft elsewhere in the 2nd and maybe trade a 4th for an established TE like Fleener who is now behind Dwayne Allen on the depth chart.

I think we regret not going after Daniels harder in hindsight, he was a good fit and had chemistry with Joe...now we're in an awkward situation with a depleted FA pool and a weak draft class at TE. Gresham or trade looks like the only options we're left with. The value just isn't there in the draft unless Williams somehow falls to our original 2nd.

  18. I never thought the Bengals had a great game plan to utilize his talents. I actually think Gresham has the ability to be jimmy graham with Flacco if his medical checks out.

I wouldn't go that far lol. A healthy Gresham is an an upgrade over Daniels though, we could definitely utilize him better than Cincy did. I think if his medical checks out he could be a 700-800 yds, 5-7 TD type of guy in our offense. He hasn't cracked 500 yds the last 2 seasons in Cincy which is very underwhelming for a player of his talent but I think a change of scenery is exactly what he needs.

I'm lukewarm on Housler at this point, if we're going to likely surrender a comp pick to sign a TE I would much rather pay more and get Gresham than take a flyer on Housler who has untapped potential but also has big bust potential. Of course this all hinges on Gresham's medical and interest from other teams but a lot of teams have already blown their "spending money" during the initial FA waves and are less likely to be active by the time Gresham is fielding offers.

The draft is not a good option for TE this year, Maxx Williams is overrated because the TE class is so weak, not worth it at 26 and not worth trading up for in the 2nd. FA is really our only option, would've liked to have retained Daniels but Gresham could present a Dumervil type payoff where we are getting a really good player who normally wouldn't have been available to us. If Gresham didn't have his medical he would've been gone the first week of FA for money way out of our price range.

  19. you have more a chance of getting struck by lightning twice, then ravens picking up crabtree

That post you quoted is a month old, that same post was also mentioning signing Eddie Royal to give you some perspective on how far we were into FA. *sigh*

  20. you are trying waayyyy too hard, man lol. theres much more talent in the draft than free agency at TE. all 10 of these guys can come in and produce year one for us. take it up with nfl writers if you still think there is weak talent at TE.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000479892/article/2015-nfl-draft-lance-zierleins-top-10-tight-ends

That article is literally just a top 10 list of the available TE's... there isn't a word about it being a strong or even average TE class.

    1

  21. Key word, Sign. We can still make trades. So far as Housler goes, it would be a nice pick up but I wont lose sleep if we dont. He will obviously go wherever the money is. We can draft a TE no problem. Theres lots of talent at that position this year.

No there isn't, this is an especially weak draft at TE. Please don't just make things up

    1

  22. Going to be ticked off if Cincy nabs Housler.. you come to Baltimore to compete for SB's, you go to Cincy to dress up like you're in the "Cats" musical and lose in the first round. If we don't get him I have no idea who the heck is going to play TE for us. I agree with pretty much every move we've made this offseason except for not re-signing Owen Daniels, still doesn't make any sense to me he was such a good fit.
