Prediction. They will sit Joe out to give him time to heal and Mallett will throw for 2 TD and 300 yards. QB controversy
I wonder how sore that shoulder will be if Mallet plays well.
The Ravens biggest problem is they lost their winning identity. Currently, the Ravens are a SOFT football team. They traded toughness for finesse. Tough guys for wimps. It hurts to admit it.
Top 10 indicators
1. Your FB dives at LB ankles when lead blocking on the goal line. (Leach, O Neal, Gash would not ever do that)
2. They pass the ball close to 65-70% of the time. Tough teams love to impose their will
3. They dominate no one!
4. Lack emotional leaders. No one looks pissed off after 3 straight losses. They are accepting losing.
Where is the fire?
5. In short yardage, they try tosses and trickery instead of hat on hat blocking.
6. No Dawgs in the locker room.
Webb and J Smith (the 2 top paid DBs) automatically let Weddle be their leader before he made one play wearing purple and black
When Ray was younger, he didn’t let Woodson, Goose, McCrary or even Deon Sanders walk in the locker for him to follow.
7. Ravens have a finesse approach to the offense line.
Ravens used to have guys like Zeus, JO, Mulitalo, Searcy, Birk, and even KO. Tough means guys that knocked people off the ball.
Over the pass few seasons, they have too many guys like Shipley, Monroe, Oher, and Hurst. Too many wimps on that offensive line.
Only Yanda is a PROVEN, consistent tough guy. They got math professors blocking for the $20M QB, and RBs
8. No fear factor on defense. Lewis, Reed, JJ, McAlister, Goose, Herring, A. Thomas, Ngata, Pollard, Landry, B. Scott, Sharper, Hartwell, and C. Williams. The list could go on.
The Ravens use to have guys on defense that tried to knock people out or could make big plays. They were feisty, sometime knuckle headed, but intimidated people from being in the middle of the field.
Who scares you on defense? No one!
9. The best players are over 30 years old and most were drafted by another team
10. Soft players lack mental toughness and discipline
Soft players commit penalties because they are TOO WEAK to block so they hold,
TOO SLOW to keep up so they grab,
They DROP balls because they are more concerned with the hit than making the play
They attempt to tackle with their arms instead of giving up their body and wrapping people up.
They false start because the guy across from them has them scared and insecure
They need to get back to a hard-nosed, smash mouth, AFC North Football
The bottom line is both the offense and defense had their chance to win the game and neither pulled it out. You cant put that all on Harbaugh taking 4 shots at getting one yard and a score that early in the game. It was the right call but wrong formations.
Sure we can put that on Harbs. He is the head coach. He is responsible if his players do not execute. He decided what players to keep and start. He and DeCosta use their 'analytics ' to draft these players right? A coach can always throw players under the bus saying it would have worked ...IF they had. These fake FG/punts have not worked at all.
It is a coach's job to be responsible.
Harbaugh: In the beginning he was winning with Billick's draft class and veterans, as well as was handed Flacco (Only piece Billick was missing) and Ray Rice and went on to win the bowl. Once Harbaugh cleared out Billick's guys and got rid of the other hard nose players, we only drafted "safe players" and had a history of being very unsatisfied with the coordinators. The common factor is that 85-90% of the things we don't like is a direct product of Harbaugh's team direction. It's time we go in a new direction because every single game is exactly the same, we barely win, we barely lose. It's becoming very insane to expect anything different from a Harbaugh lead team.
The draft in the last few years has been a weak spot for the R's. Add to that most of the so called impact players are now in their 30's and well on the way to retirement. A Coach can only go with what's given to him by the FO which try's to keep plugging holes with older, named players who have seen their better days. They may shortly have to come to the realization that a rebuilding project is in the immediate future and that would be better accomplished by a change in the FO.
So you think during the draft and before hand that Harbaugh is in never never land making no decisions on which players he wants to coach out of the gathered talent the FO presents to him.... If that's the case that's another reason he should be gone, he can't be counted on to help bring the right players in. But that's not the case, these weak draft classes are people he signed off on.
No he's not in never, never land but one can be assured he's not the final say whom gets drafted and the top priority thereof. He's just one cog in the final determination and his job description is to coach the team and not be the final determinative factor at all. That's the job of the FO and while they may seek his advice he'll be overruled in a heartbeat if the FO is enamored with someone. Also, once again, the holes they're filling with over the hill players lies squarely with the FO, period. He's even stated on more than one occasion that he's given the players to work with and his job is to try and make the best out of it. When you have a 37 yr old WR who is obviously hurt and at the end of his playing days and 30 something LB's who either can't pressure the QB or can't even get on the field, as is with case of Elvis, that falls on the FO. Now Satnley's hurt: that BYU fella is out for the year; Perriman is not living up to all the hype; and the lack of depth is, once again this year, all too apparent. That is not the fault of the coach but the FO. He may take the hit for this but he'll be hired by someone else in a football minute. It's highly doubtful any replacement will do any better unless there's a change in philosophy.
I agree. OZ and DeCosta's draft have been terrible these last few years. In a passing league where you need Wr, Cb, pass rushers, they double down on TE, ILB, and DTs.
That being said. Harbs gambling has cost the team. They are still passing twice as much as running the ball. It's all of them. Something needs to be shaken up.
Giants coaching staff made adjustment and the Ravens staff did not.
On offense, the Ravens were stuffing them early then they went to a hurry-up offense, they continued to take shots down the field with their best guy by moving him around.
On defense, they realized their 4 linemen was not getting to Flacco so they sent CB blitzes. When they got beat they faked and tried to keep safety over the top..
The Ravens on the other hand, knowing there line is banged up, continue to pass the ball. Even when near goal line , they are passing the ball. No Hurry up and no commitment to running. 25 runs 48 pass. When you have that distribution in a one score game and an injured o-line, that's just stupid coaching.
My five thoughts will be based on reasons why the Ravens need to make changes.
1. Most of the best players on the team are guys the Ravens brought in via free agency. A lot of the guys they draft are on the bench or special teams way too often.
Smith Sr, Wallace, Weddle, Watson (injured). In the past Boldin, Mason, McKinney, McGahee.
This organization consistently relies on free agents (old players) instead of building through the draft. It’s no wonder they are against the cap and can’t keep good players. There was a time when every year OZ drafted a pro bowler. What happened?
2. Over the last few seasons, the Ravens are one of the most penalized teams. Has Harbs lost the ability to instill discipline?
3. Their highest paid players are the most inconsistent and disappointing.
Flacco is not elite. He is inconsistent in every aspect of the position.
Webb is overpaid.
J Smith does not look like a 1st round CB.
Where are the pro bowls among these players? If I’m not mistaken, none of them have a pro bowl.
Joe caught fire in 2012 and is solid in the playoffs, but regular season he is average at best.
4. 5 offensive coordinators and the offense still stinks. In fact, it was worst under Billick. Harbs is not an X and Os guys. He does not have the competence to contribute to developing a successful system on either side of the ball. As a result, the front office hire all these former coaches with their own viewpoints. Ravens need a coach that implement a system that guides how they draft and build an identity.
5. Ravens are heading toward missing the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 seasons. They are 8-14 so far over the past 2 seasons. The consistency Steve mentioned in the state of the Ravens is not working. Quality of draft, ability to retain top players , ability to develop young talent, lack of pro bowlers at positions you draft and players with big contracts are all on the decline.
Maybe it takes a couple of losing seasons for it to sink in that this is not a good football team and the philosophy in the organization needs to change
This past offseason the front office thought missing the playoffs was a blip and expected to make it.
Front office believed with the #6 overall pick and 11 draft picks in total, that they could turn things around quickly. DeCosta commented that the fact Perriman did not play would be like having 2 first round draft picks this season.
Steve noted the impact of losing Suggs and pass rush is critical to Ravens success.
Reality Check
1. With 11 draft picks, where are the play makers and depth?.
2. Joe, Webb, J Smith all look overpaid. It kills me that these guys get paisd and guys like Boldin, KO, and maybe B Williams are too expensive.
3. Where is the pass push?
4. Why did Wright get a deal?
5. Why is out best receiver always over 33 years old.
Game Recap...
1) How many times will coaching cost Ravens games. Coach Horrible chasing points 3 straight games, and again costing a win. This week take the fg.. would have set up a Tucker GW Fg at the end instead of needing a TD.
2) Better playcalling flow, more deep shots from Marty but still 48 passes unacceptable. West 23 for 87, When Ravens had a 10-0 lead at 1 point, and 10-10 most of the game. Run the ball 30x West could and should of had 30 for 115-120.
3) Coaching Decisions and injuries costing team. Harbaugh or coach Horrible take the freaking points you already lost 3 games chasing points. Also this team is embarrassment to the city with a makeshift Oline 15 penalties.
I wont watch another game, unless they get half their starters back.
Im done watching Ducasse,Jenson, etc until Stanley,Yanda etc gets Harbaughs approval Im done with this embarrassment of a team
Harbaugh is getting worse1. If they take the FG, it changes the rest of the plays from there on out. So, it doesn't set up a game winning FG. It's foolish to think that is actually possible. We wouldn't have even been in position to win the game if Harbs hadn't went for on 4th & 5.
2. West had 3 chances to score from the 1 yard line and couldn't - you think he gets 30 yards on 7 more carries? The Giants tighten their run D and the run wasn't working. You call the plays that the defense gives you. Juice with the worst (non) block by a fullback ever.
3. O-line, Injuries & Pass Rush (or lack thereof) is why we are losing games.
It is impossible to look at the Ravens over the 4 years and believe Harbs has nothing to do with their lack of success.
He is the head coach.
He hires the coordinators and coaching staff.
He and with OZ draft players and decide what free agents to sign, who to keep
It the coach's job to be responsible for development of players and instill discipline
It's his job to build an identity for the team.
It's not just Harbs, it's his job to be responsible . The team is not moving in the right direction over the last 4 years.
Key points in the game
1. After Wallace 70 yard catch and face mask penalty, Ravens inside the 10 just had poor series of plays called. Ultimately Harb decided to go for it on fourth down with a sweep. Just a dumb decision.
2. Pees never adjusted to OBJ. This is no different than when AJ Green torches the Ravens in the 4th quarter. Where was the safety help?
3. Early in the game holding penalties killed the Ravens. It put them in 3rd and long too often
4. Flacco and Marty never adjusted to the corner blitz and JPP started to work Lewis without getting help. I hope to see a difference. I am starting to think a coach calls a play and its up to the QB to see what the defense is doing to adjust. Joe does not seem to do that.
You people blaming harbaugh are ridiculous. You should be happy we came close, given all the injures we had. It's almost a repeat of 2012. We lost by 17 points, but we weren't healthy. It's literally the same story. Now I do admit not going for a FG in RETROSPECT was a bad call, but we had plenty of opportunity to overcome that...and we didn't injures man injures. So moral of the story is stop blaming john for everything. Actually do a good enough analysis for once before you type some BS online, you're embarrassing ravens nation.
John, is that you?
Do you know
your 8-14 in the last 22 games,
on pace to miss the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years
your team commits double digit penalties almost every week,
your young players are not developing
And this is the 3rd week ina row where your decisions cost the team points?
In retrospect? This is the 3rd week in a row. How many sticks of dynamite need to go off. Because of the injuries , he should have taken the points. SMH
For the last 22 games , this teams struggles against every opponent. Against god teams it fools you into believing they are better than they are.
I know Steve preached about consistency a the last state of the Ravens , but it is time to blow this thing up.
Get a new coach and new coordinator. You have to ask what does John bring by himself. Don't hire from within. Go outside for some fresh perspective.
Harbs seat is getting hot. And that's a good thing. There is no one else to throw in the way of his decisions. Three weeks in a row you take points off the board
I bet he comments on OBJ going wild to quietly throw Pees under the bus.
Another time going for it on 4th down in the red zone that leads to no points.
Harbs is killing a team that needs all the help it can get with injuries. unbelievable 3 weeks in a row.
Both the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side of the have a QB to make the calls and adjustments. If those two guys don't do a good job recognizing what the other team is doing , the play calling won't matter.
Weddle has appeared to do a great job of getting guys into position. The defense has most of the same guys from last year and the same DC. Yet, the defense has made improvements.
Until Joe gets the offense in the right play, recognize mismatches and deliver the ball accurately on a consistent basis, the offense will struggle. I want to see Joe display command of the offense.
Currently Joe has the 33rd ranked QB rating, 31st in yards per attempt. He must do better than that no matter what plays are called in order for the Ravens to have a chance. If things go south , I would sit Joe down and see what Mallet can do. Joe needs to be held accountable. If the O-line can't protect him, then preserve him until the o-line can get healthy.
No he won't. He likes to pass just as much as Trestman if not more. That may be why he did not fit in NY. He may give offense a spark temporarily but in the long term, I don't think he fits a run first attack which is what work in Baltimore
I want to see an offensive identity. Plays design to get the best out of what they have. If Perriman struggles catching, give him short screen passes and let him get yac. If Wallace struggles with separation, setup crossing routes and picks. If the line struggles with protection, roll Joe out of the pocket. Rediscover Aiken please. He carried the passing game last season and now is rarely targeted. I think some guys need to get in a flow.Feed West and Dixon the ball.
1. Is the offense balanced?
2. Does Joe paly any better?
3. Do we need to blitz to get pressure?
4. Impact of young guys (Moore, Perriman, Correa, Judon, Onaswor)
5. Do coaches continue to get in the way with bad paly calling, poor decisions, bad clock management?
I believe the coaches stole 2 away from the Ravens. With all the problems on the o-line and untimely penalties, the 2 loss games came down to fake FGs, declining penalties, and poor play calling.
Good Move. I think he should have been on team before Carter. I think he will help on special teams coverage
Some of these young guys like Correa, Perriman, Judon need more snaps anyway. I am looking forward to a new approach in the offense.
J. Smith got beat by Garcon so no need for him to follow OBJ around. Ravens pass rush needs to show up. Don't forget about Cruz and Shepard. This is a big test for the Ravens defense.
The Ravens are not snake bit or did not have a losing season last year due to injuries. They are old at some of the key playmaking positions (pass rusher and Wr), their drafts and players with big contracts have not live up to expectations, and they get out coached in close games.
We should not be handicapped cause a 37 year old receiver is injured,
After 11 draft picks there is still limited depth on the o-line
Flacco is on his 5th OC and still can't all his own plays or make adjustments at the line.
All of this points to a poorly coached team and inability to develop young players.
I am not concerned with Smith Sr, Doom, Yanda, or Mosley being injured.
Ravens should be giving Correa and Judon more snaps anyway. Perriman as a first round draft pick needs reps in games to grow and Aiken has become a forgotten player in the offense.
I am starting to feel like Harbs sit guys down so he can have the injury excuse if they lose the next couple of games. You take away Kubiak and this team has been on a downward trend for the last 4 years.
After every game you hear the same next game, work on it excuses. Steve, we are becoming a losing football team.
This team is stale. I like Harbs, but even I a fan that hears him say the same thing EVERY week I'm tired of it I know the team has to be tired of it as well. The rebuild should have started this season now the Ravens will lose a year. Fire everyone except Decoasta promote him and get rid of all of them its time Steve. I live in California and didn't buy the NFL package after last year.
Typical knee jerk reaction. Fire everyone. Brilliant deduction Holmes.
They should have offered Kubiak the head coaching job instead of letting him walk. He got more production out of your franchise player than anyone.
Now you have Harbs who is not an X and Os coach so you need to fire a guy instead of a head coach that can simply tell his OC to keep running the ball.
If Ravens want to see another championship, they need to move beyond Harbs. His best seasons were with Ray, Reed, Boldin, Leach, Birk, Mason,Magahee)
Strong vets and leaders that would have walked up to him during that game and said, "Run the Darn Ball !" , "Take the points!", "Fake FG.. Are you nuts!"
Harbs surrounded himself with yes men. That's not strong leadership
sounds great but how is all that done with a o-line thats shaky and your top receivers hurt, the one thats not can't get open alot, when he does he can't catch the ball and hasn't learned how to toe tap,he'll be a third rate receiver for us just like all the rest of OZZIES receiver picks.
It's funny how fans expects more from a Perriman than a 9 year vet QB. The ball was thrown high and outside. It would have been a great play if he made the catch and got both feet in. A lot of receivers in the league would not have been able to make that play. That hardly makes him a bust at this point. Torrey would have watched the ball go over his head.
How about the QB that can't put more than 10 points on the board against that sorry defense?
Why can't Joe audible at the line and throw the ball more than 5 yards per attempt?
Not that I did not want Trestman gone, but Joe is turning into an OC killer. That 5 in 9 years.

If the Ravens can't beat the Jets, then what does that say about them being a team that can get to the playoffs? It would be the 4th consecutive loss heading into a bye week and two conference losses. After the bye they will face teams a lot better than the jets. It is definitely a must win.
Eisenberg is such a blind homer.
