Re-signing Williams should IMHO be as high of a priority as re-signing Flacco was after our SB run. From the top of my head, I cannot think of another defensive player who makes teammate around him look so good as B.Williams does.
Dolphins had to block him with 4 players at times. First, that allowed LBs to make pretty much open field tackles on RB at the freaking line of scrimmage! LBs are drooling over these opportunities. Second, it left pass rushers on one-on-one blocks coming from the edge. Guys like Suggs and Doom nearly never get opportunities like that otherwise. Lastly, thanks to the havoc wrecked by the front seven, defensive backfield had a blast defending the panic-passes QB was able to get off of his hand.
I’m pretty sure that without Williams, Orr would not look half as impressive starter as he currently does, Suggs and Doom would be overwhelmed by double teams they’d be getting, rest of the pass rush department would be invisible, and the DBs would be exposed and shredded like they have been for past couple of seasons without pressure up front.
So dear FO, can we please please please do EVERYTHING we can do keep Williams?? I envision our defense being in the TOP5 for many years to come with Williams behemothing up front alongside Jernigan, Pierce, Davis and out of the TOP10 without him.
I actually think I haven’t wanted anyone to be re-signed as badly as I want them to re-sign Williams. My Christmas wish right there.

JOE FLACCO = 1st BALLOT HOF, ALL-PRO MVP, G.O.A.T., BEST 4EVR!!1!!!!1111 ->Seems to be the reaction of way too many fans I've seen. Can't even look at those people seriously.
Awesome effort by everyone! Now, don't rest on your laurels, go to NE and prove this performance wasn't a fluke! GO RAVENS!

From my personal experience, if you dare to say anything critical about anyone from our team on these boards, you're pretty much a critical pessimistic hater who should roll over and die.

Whoaw, slow down there champ! It was one pick in one game. Reed did it game in and game out for better part of 10 years. I'm not trying to take anything away from Webb, he had hell of a game. That doesn't put him in the same conversation with Reed though.
Consider this, Webb is getting paid nearly as much as Earl Thomas. Is he playing as well as Earl Thomas?
He will take some cut because he is currently under a CB contract. However, you cannot get into comparing the contracts of other team's players, lots are overpaid and lots are underpaid. Take Joe's contract for example just 15% of his contract for next season would greatly help the team.
Ironic that you mention overpaid-underpaid players, cause Webb certainly is overpaid, when you consider his salary and his playing level. So you are right in that he must take a (considerable) pay cut. He's due to make 7.5 next year. At least 2.5 off of that. I'm just not sure if he'll agree to that, but I don't see him being worth more than 5mil.

That's where Ravens football starts. Stopping the run. Can't remember if it was last year or a couple years ago that we couldn't stop the run....that was maybe the most embarassing experience as a Ravens fan I've had while watching. Out of the guys on this list I'll list them in order of importance to the team imo:
Orr
Wagner
Juice
Guy
Webb- part of the reason I put him last is I've been very unimpressed with his play this year. Esp. with the pieces around him. ( Except our worst defender/player-Wright). He hasn't really been getting burned but there have been a few close ones. And I haven't seen ANY playmaking/ballhawking. Maybe he's saving it for Dec/Jan/Feb ball
I'm on board 100% with you. The rule of thumb to building a great football team, at least a great Ravens team, should be to build outward from between the numbers. On both sides of the ball. Ofcourse there needs to be some balance, but cornerstone to everything else is the line. We've always been in competition, if we've had great offensive and/or defensive lines. We can have the best skill position players in the league, nothing will get done if O-line or D-line is leaky.
I would keep Wanger over Webb. Webb's best days are past him.
I wouldn't keep either. Yes, Wagner would not get paid top dollar for RT. But considering the fact that all his years so far have been very up and down, there is no reason to believe he'll be a consistently dominant going forward. But he'd probably be paid that way.
Webb can stay IMO if he takes at least 60% pay cut down to 3mil. It'll probably still be too much for a FS playing the way he's playing, but at that rate it can at least be a discussion. Otherwise he should be the first guy out from the team.
The back end was the team's weakness for the past few years and you would do what to maintain the strength of this year? Sorry, but that is one area that I'd want to maintain as I strengthen perhaps the Center of the OL and another quality CB.
Consider this, Webb is getting paid nearly as much as Earl Thomas. Is he playing as well as Earl Thomas?

I admire him, think he has done well, but whether or not he knows it, the type of hitting that goes on in this game will knock 2 or 3 years off your career. He thinks he has faced some tough defenses and maybe he feels he has, but it isn't the #1 run defense in the league who not only leads the league in fewest yards allowed but in running first downs as well, by almost 20, over the next closest team. This defense is much more than Jay Ajayi could imagine in his worst nightmare. It will be interesting to see what he has to say after 4 quarters of some up and close personal time with Brandon Williams and co. He would have done better had he faced the Ravens earlier in the season when his legs were the strongest and the Ravens defense was still getting it together. Right now, I am actually excited to watch our defense play, takes me back to the old days. You can see Flacco is running better and moving easier and when it gets cold, he gets hot. (if you watch Wired, listen to Dixon say that "for a big man, Joe was moving." You could see in his face Dixon was honestly impressed.) That's making me feel like the old Joe is getting close to healing and being himself again.
Your description got me so excited for our defense this Sunday! GO RAVENS!

What in the world gives you any reason to think that?
Though, I sure hope so, too. Been hoping for it this entire season.

Noone will be taking our defensive linemen for a ride on their backs, make no mistake about that!
Our LBs and Weddle won't go down without delivering some pain first, either.
You're right about the rest of the DBs though. At least half of them tackle worse than practice dummies (especially you, Webb).
Would love to see most of them back, but the most important thing - DO NOT OVERPAY ANY OF THEM!
None of them are impact players, difference makers, worthy of top money, though some of them probably want to be paid that way.

webb isnt really the either/or here
I sadly agree. Would love to see Williams stay, especially since he's not one of those one-year-wonders like Mcphee or Kruger were, Williams is a true franchise cornerstone around whom you can build a great defense. But unfortunately I too don't see Oz opening up the checkbook for him. He'll rather take the 3rd round comp pick and gamble with our other D-linemen (Jernigan, Pierce and Davis) to fill his shoes. And I'm afraid it might backfire like it did, to some extent, with KO.
It sounds more believable that Wagner will get resigned which, I think, is again a risky move. If they resign him, they will probably way overpay him. It's the first solid year from him. Yeah, I know, he's flashed before, but always been up and down. And even this year did not start so well for him. So there's no real reason to believe that he'll be consistently dominant in years to come. Yet he'll be paid that way.
I'd much prefer the more expensive, yet much safer and impactful signing of Williams. Because don't forget that Alex Lewis was drafted with OT position in mind. So we could look a replacement for Wagner from the draft or move Lewis to RT, Urschel to LG and find solid depth from the draft, which we have always been good at.
Man, with Doom and Sizzle both playing our defense will be even more dominant! Can't wait for Sunday, Dolphins run game will be a nice challenge. Has the potential to be a great game for us. GO RAVENS!
Nice! Really really hope they will be playing in London next year, the trip to London from Estonia isn't so long. Would be finally able to attend my very first Ravens game! GO RAVNES!

The Ravens have done this before and I remember watching brady do it against the squeelers back in the day! Squeelers defense was so dominant on a MNF in squeeltown and that's how brady broke them down! No runs just slinging that Rock! We got the WRs, TEs and backs that can catch also! Gotta avg 30 pts a game if you want some
"JUICE" and now Joe wants to floor it! "YES" or should I say "FINALLY"! 11-5 IS POSSIBLE! WE THE BEST!
Flacco hasn't shown a single glimpse of improvement for 11 games, but at least he finally said that the offense needs to score more points! Thankfully we now have a plan and all our offense's problems are solved!
"Keep our foot on gas" and "Put teams away", why hasn't anyone else figured that puzzle out. Thanks to that stroke of genius, we're now gonna score 40 points per game, averaging 500 passing yards and 7 passing TDs per game. AND we're going to finish the season 13-3! FLACCO = FIRST BALLOT HOF; MVP; GOAT. FTW!
smh
Pitta should never be used on a run play but only on a play he gets the ball. Most ñegative run plays are when Pitta is in. STOP with your sorry reverses cause their not faking no one out. Ravens run practices have to be a joke the way they play.
I was thinking the same thing on Sunday, but then again, defenses in the NFL are not stupid and work very very hard on game tape. You can bet your Butt that if we were to use Pitta only in passing plays, we would be even worse off and Flacco's completion % would be something like 2%.
But one thing for sure, we should never ever run the ball on the side, where Pitta is the sole outside containment. Either have a o-lineman pull or FB or additional TE there to help, cause otherwise we might as well spike the ball, at least we wouldn't lose any yards.
In the second half, it was 2nd and short (maybe 3?). We were in the gun, defense showed a double A gap blitz. Flacco audibles, goes under center, and then has the run go STRAIGHT INTO WHERE THE BLITZ WAS!!!
9 year vet right there for ya.
We need to keep on gas, but Flacco needs to make better audibles. Among other things we need to correct on our offense.
13 hours ago, metalraven said:I'm glad we won. But man, this team is still very far from being a threat IF they make the playoffs. Today, I saw some of the worst play calling on the offensive side of the ball. In the first half, Ravens were nearing the red zone, it was 2nd and 1, and they called a FREAKING HB DELAY that got blown up. THEN, they run the off tackle on 3rd and 3, and that too got blown up. It was absolutely atrocious. In the second half, it was another 2nd and short, maybe 3. They're in the gun, defense shows a double A gap blitz. Flacco then audibles, then goes under center, and the run goes RIGHT INTO WHERE THE BLITZ WAS!!! I simply could not believe it. This game should not have been close. But when you have a moron at QB and a moron calling the plays, welp, you either lose, or barely win. Unbelievable. I hope they watch the tape and say: "What the hell was I thinking there?!?!"
Amen brother!
Damn, Jimmy a solid player, but fragile as porcelain :/
12 hours ago, bigcatfrank1 said:Ra ra, Your points seem to be about play on the field are true...but are really not the same situation as current contract issues. Unless you are saying to FIRE Joe Flacco. That is probably not going to happen. The real issue is that Joe has a negotiated contract for a QB position in the NFL because he is a Super Bowl winning quarterback with multi play-off wins that is comparable with other peers in his field ( aka Russel Wilson (7-3) Drew Brees (4-6) Aaron Rogers (4-6), Eli Manning ( 7-3), and even others who haven't won a SB making a payday very similar ( Carson Palmer (4-5) Matt Ryan (6-4), Andrew Luck (5-5) Phillip Rivers (4-6). Terms like "Payday" and the "big contract" occur to QB's and often key players its just the nature of the beast. He is absolutely not having a good season this year, no doubt. He could improve those statistics, maybe, maybe not. But it will not change next year for the Ravens when it comes to Joe Flacco, that's for sure. So the article really focuses on the rest of the team, the UFA and the caps that may need to be looked at. If some of the other "pay day" earners were to step up it may go a long way.... Go Ravens
Yes, I think you probably understand me correctly. My issue isn't with Flacco per se, it's with his contract not being on par with his playing level. And that in turn has an effect on the rest of the team, because we can't afford other valuable pieces.
Yes, he did earn a big payday with the SB win. He was very fortunate to have it happen on his last contract year. And I would not have a problem with the buck he's making, if he would play good. But he's not, at lest not consistently enough. Most of the time he is playing barely on an adequate level. Some times he's playing well. Some times he's playing awful. Yet he's getting payed like a top 4 QB, which he is not.
I can't stress it enough, it would not be an issue, and he would probably play better if we could afford better players around him. But we can't, because of Flacco's salary. Flacco's salary would probably not be an issue to me, if he would play better, which he is not.
The way I see it, we are in a really shtty stalemate with Flacco and his salary - he doesn't play well, because he doesn't have good enough players around him. He doesn't have good enough players around him, because he's getting paid top money. And if we were able to afford good players around him, he too would play well and earn top money.
And like you said, we can't fire him. That's why I'm afraid, that unless Flacco starts playing the way he usually does in the playoffs, we'll be in for 4-6 years of mediocrity, until something changes with Flacco's salary or the cap jumps significantly.
