Right now at this point in time... if we can find a cheap veteran RT in free agency and maybe a cheap 1 year stop gap FS to plug in... I wouldn't mind at all to see us trade our 1st and 3rd this year, and a 2nd next year to move up for Sammy Watkins. I know this wont happen and Im going to get negged but its my opinion.
Ebron in the first would make this offense absolutely lethal but we don't need him at this point. I would take Owen Daniels for a cheap deal in FA. We need a ballhawk safety and none are there in free agency because they are almost impossible to find. I can think of 4 or 5 in the NFL right now if that. Earl Thomas, Jairus Byrd, Eric Berry and Ed Reed to an extent though not so much anymore. Calvin Pryor to Baltimore please.
Draft Pryor in the first and a RT in the second with Oher gone. No need to draft a WR now with Smith, Smith, Jones and Brown here for awhile together. Maybe a tight end in the third. One that can block and catch decently. Or sign Owen Daniels and take care of that problem right there. We still have around 10m in cap space not counting what we have to give to the draft picks so probably more like 7m.
We got a faster version of Anquan Boldin back. I love it.
but for TWO years tops .. really think about it, again love smith. but are you telling me youd rather get smith for two years than go after nicks for 4 or 5 who also had great years, and once his contract is up we could still re sign for 3 or 4 more years. come on man, be real about. im speaking logic
Obviously everyone would take Nicks over Smith... the problem is the FO doesn't seem interested in Nicks. Probably will get too much of a big contract for us to afford at this point. And the 2 years of production COULD lead to another super bowl so don't discount it. That's all I am saying.
friend dallas caught 31 passes last playing most the season, hell are you talking about. and stokely? really buddy, love the guy but really was he signing ? what part , oh the one where he caught 13 passes. oh the fact he retired where he started? right. great. and smith is coming to play the slot more than anything else thats known, and no im not saying marlon would be phased, im saying he played alot of slot last year and caught 7 tds why move him? but bc the name smith looks great on paper youre doing cart wheels.. again WAKE UP SON!!!!
Hey friend... Clark played well considering he was signed for the vet minimum and was a band aid because we were screwed when Pitta when down. And read what I said before you speak. I said Stokely would have been a good signing but no one could predict he would get hurt. And cool if Smith comes to play the slot, Marlon is on the outside. Who cares? They are all on the field at the same time. I think you're the one who needs to WAKE UP SON!!!! because you sound like a Steeler fan right now. When Steve Smith balls out for us this year you will see. That's all I am saying. 2 years removed from 80 catches and 1400 yards. Half of that production plus his leadership and passion and he is a hell of a pick up.
Boldin was with us for three years. It wasn't long-lived. Would you say it was worth it?
Thank JESUS someone said it. People are acting like Steve Smith is 45 years old. He is 2 years removed from 80 catches 1400 yards, still tough as hell, fiery as hell, has a lot of passion and would probably be up there speed wise with Jacoby Jones still at the age of 34.
you dont what kind of supporter i am .. but since youre curious, im the kind of thats realistic. smith is one of my favorite wr period, but lets say he catches 75+ passes and 800+ yards hes 34 if him and joe get good chemistry it wont be long lived... now you seem to be the delusional that probably jumped for joy when we signed deon sanders, or dallas clark or stokely and thought theyd dramatically upgrade our team. WAKE UP SON
I think you are the one who needs to wake up because Dallas Clark played well last year outside of a few drops while Pitta was gone. I don't understand why Deion Sanders was brought into this discussion and Stokely was a good signing for the price. No one could predict him getting hurt. That being said, I see you complaining how Marlon Brown will some how be phased out of the offense if Steve signs here as if there is no such thing as 3 and 4 WR sets. And who ever said Steve Smith would take Marlon Browns spot as the #2 receiver.
1. There is no doubt in my mind that this team is drafting a pass catcher in the first three rounds of this draft, regardless of whether they add a Steve Smith or not. Adding a veteran is putting a band aid on a broken bone, because he's essentially a short-term player. If Steve Smith gets signed, its going to be for the short-term. Beyond Torrey (who isn't even under contract next season currently) and Pitta, there are gigantic question marks with every single pass catcher on this roster currently, including Brown (who I will now address).
2. When you say "he will only get better"... that is defined by one word... guess. You are guessing he will get better. The list of players just like him who ended up with 3 or 4 total years in the NFL is a mile long. Could he get better? Absolutely. Will he? Time will tell. Me personally... I think its entirely possible we've seen the best of him. I know its fun for fans to project that somebody who had 600 yards in year 1 is going to have 1200 yards by year 4, but theres really no evidence to suggest that. Just like thinking since he scored 7 TDs in year 1 that he will be scoring 10+ next season? If they bring in Steve Smith and another rookie (which is likely), how often do you even think Brown is going to be on the field? In a 2 WR, 2 TE set, which is what Kubiak runs most often, Torrey and Smith are on the field, and Brown is on the sideline.
The only chance I even remotely see of Brown being an integral part of this offsense next season is via injury. I see him as a role player in the redzone, just like I see Jacoby (who is also competing with Brown for snaps on offense) as a role player on offense.
The fact that the FO is even addressing this idea both in FA and in the draft, to me, is indicative of their views of the talent of the younger guys in this receiving core.
So, in summary, NO, Marlon hasn't "proved he can play". I'm never going to claim anybody has "proved they can play" based on one season with the team. To me, Marlon is a JAG player... "just another guy".
1. First of all what offense in todays NFL doesn't run through 3 WRs? You're acting like Marlon Brown is never going to see the field at the same time as Torrey Smith and Steve if he were to sign here.
2. You're jumping to the conclusion that Steve Smith would be the #2 wideout and not Marlon Brown... which like you said... is a pure "guess".
3. "Marlon hasn't proved he can play" - Then what do you call 600 yards and 7 TDs? I am not saying he will be a 100 catch, 1000 yard 10 TD perennial all pro player. But he has proven he can play with little experience and a very slim chance to make the roster. If they didn't think highly of him he wouldn't have made it past training camp last year.
4. Even if he stays as a 600 yard 5 TD catch guy for the rest of his career, that's a hell of a lot more productive than the #2 WR's we have had in our history outside of what Torrey Smith did his first 2 years.
smdh disappointed in our fo for this move man
You're exactly the kind of fan that complains now but when he finishes the season with 700 yards and 5 or more TDs you pretend like you approved the move all along.
They might also be thinking... "jesus, we feel so great about his skills that we are bringing in at least two people to compete for the exact role that he had last season".
What are you even talking about who are these 2 people you speak of? Steve Smith and who? Another rookie WR? You really think we would draft a WR high if Steve Smith is signed? No. It would be Torrey and Steve on the outsides with Marlon in the slot. Period.
Yes, but keep in mind... the mantra from their supporters on this team is that they should basically be handed a job, just like they couldn't understand why Tommy Streeter wasn't given a starting job two years ago.
Competition brings out the best in everybody... with one caveat. The loser of the competition doesn't get to play on Sunday's, which is the goal of the whole thing. There is no minor league baseball system in the NFL. If Mellette gets beat out by a rookie and/or a veteran for a spot on this roster, he doesn't play. He practices on the practice squad, and he competes at a high level during training camp.
Mellette and Brown could turn out to be very good players... but if they can't beat out the person in front of them, we will never have any idea of whether they are very good players or not, because they won't be playing.
You bring in somebody like Steve Smith and then use a first or second round pick on a WR, they are essentially handed gigs on this team, while guys like Brown and Mellette aren't. There's a big difference there.
You keep talking about Mellette like he has proven something and deserves to be handed a spot on the roster. And you keep putting Mellette and Browns name together like Marlon didn't have a 600 yard and 7 TD rookie year. You are acting like he has to prove he can play. We already know he can and he will only get better. He dropped 2 or 3 potential TD's last year so he could have had around 10. And he also missed a few games with the hamstring injury. Not to mention our offense completely sucked and he and Torrey were the lone bright spots at skill positions.
And by the way... for all the people that think this team is pretty good at WR currently... the FO doesn't seem to agree with you. I expect the Ravens to add two pass catchers this offseason, one in FA and one in the draft. To me... thats a pretty good indication of what the franchise thinks about guys like Marlon Brown and Aaron Mellette.
They probably think about Marlon Brown as "Jesus, we signed this guy as an undrafted free agent and he score 7 TDs and had 600 yards on one of the worst offenses in the NFL. We love him".
Charley Casserly (a former NFL GM) said it best on NFL network.. "In FA young and healthy is what you want to sign".. The reason he believes Monroe was a big signing over the likes of a Brandon Albert etc.. Same goes for S.Smith vs these other WRs.. If your going to spend money make it last..
Key word there is "Former" my man. Veteran WRs are a great thing especially if they can play the slot. Look at what we did with Derrick Mason.
If we sign Steve Smith we don't have to draft a WR early with Jacoby being back. Means we can go FS in the first round and RT in the second round and MLB in the 3rd if Daryl isn't back... which I think he will be. I am still hoping we some how get Mack from Cleveland
Excuse my last comment... if it is really 3.2m we will have about 18m left. Damn. We can really do some things.
If Monroe's cap hit is really 3.2m this year we have 16m left and a legit shot at signing Jairus Byrd. I'm just saying. Id give him 4 years 30m make sure his cap hit is low this year too. Why the hell not.
Realistically we dont need a corner if we just keep graham, or ANOTHER STRONG SS. you picking Calvin Pryor in the draft is a horrible choice. why would you decide to go 2 strong safeties in the back field? if your going to use the draft for a safety you pick Ha Ha Clinton Dix, the actual true Free Safety, or you dont pick at all.
Clearly you don't know what you're talking about considering Pryor is a free safety. And I was saying we need a cornerback if Graham doesn't resign.
Realistically... here is what I hope happens in free agency. Sign Monroe, get a veteran center for cheap, resign Daryl Smith, grab a cheap veteran WR for the slot (Steve Smith if he wants to take a cheap contract to play for a winner, maybe Holmes but he seems to always be hurt, or someone else), grab maybe Owen Daniels or another backup tight end for cheap. And that seems like it would most definitely take all of our cap space. Hopefully Ngata and/or Yanda will extend like Suggs to give us more breathing room. If that happened a solid veteran corner wouldn't be a bad idea such as Champ, Cromartie, Rogers or whoever else is out there. Aside from that, I hope for Calvin Pryor in the first round to sure up the secondary and defense and a Right tackle or a WR in the 2nd round. Excuse me for playing Ozzie Newsome for a second there but I think that would be a great offseason.
I cant be the only one who wishes we could some how void Ray Rices contract and use that and some extra money to sign Revis... I know its not going to happen its just crazy to think about what we could do blitz package wise with Revis and Jimmy on the outsides with Webb in the slot. I think we would have the new legion of boom.

Ed Reynolds or Terrence Brooks sometime tomorrow hopefully. We need to address the FS position. Im hoping our 3 picks tomorrow go FS, RB and WR. Any order. Preferably end up with Brooks/Reynolds, Terrance West and Allen Robinson. It would be magical if Marqise Lee found his way to us in the middle of the second round. Doubt it though.
