Hopefully Melvin can keep it up. So far he reminds me of Cary Williams.
in terms of size and closing ability and toughness yes i see the similarities, but his play since he has stepped in has been much better than what we saw from cary williams, cary loved to play 10 yards off and give up slants left and right, all that size was wasted by an inability to press, melvin has been excellent in press coverage, now if he could learn to jump routes like cary williams did then he would be aforce to be reckoned with, kinda hard to jump routes though when the qb doesnt wanna throw your way.
the world doesnt realize our secondary has improved by leaps and bounds, webb has returned to form and succeeded hugely in his toughest test probably of his career last saturday, and rashaan melvin has done his best jimmy smith impression, he is excellent in press ocverage, has great length and athleticism, he may be getting some big spotlight in this postseason run if he keeps it up, the secondary was the one thing holding us back from a possible super bowl run, and now the secondary is looking quite good, none of us were sold on our new secondary, until we saw what they did to the steelers passing attack, but now, we have a legitimate chance here, as long as the secondary holds up the way it has the last 2 games
He's been much better these past 2 games, but I've also seen a lot less of him, which may or may not be a good thing. He could be a guy that just thrives in a smaller role, which I'm hoping isn't the case. It's a step in the right direction at least.
i dont really think its the case, i just think too much was forced on him, and if he gets the opportunity to take it slow and steadily pick up all the pieces from a small role like he has now, and expand slowly into a starting SS role maybe like by week 10 next season, then he will be ok, he doesnt seem to be the brightest at his young age, but that is the case with many players who turned into studs, some examples would be jimmy, suggs, upshaw, i think he will be fine if we allow him to continue to take it slow.
he was thinking too much after playing so many different roles and being force fed too much responsibility, he has finally been allowed to settle into a position without too high of a snap count and a consistent role. that over thinking and that stress of not having the confidence of "been there, done that" affected his ability to focus, and thus affected his physical performance, such as bad form in tackling, bad angles, and trying to make up for his bad plays by trying too hard to make splash plays.
he just needed to settle down, learn one position, and take it slow from there, and we are starting to see it, he played an excellent game saturday night, and i love his splash play potential, he seems to have a knack for punching the ball out, we just can never seem to recover them when he strips it.
if we can beat NE and elam has another good game, then he is gonna be finally stacking good performances, that confidence, and familiarity with his new role, is going to help him improve his game by leaps and bounds. you all wrote him off too early, i was close to writing him off as well and i was one of his most avid supporters, but i still held out hope, and he is starting to show why we needed to keep hoping for him.
is this the super tall guy always wearing a golf cap and a trenchcoat on the sidelines? i see him all the time and i never found out who he is..
as one of elams biggest defenders... im just about ready to draw the line on him and label him a bust.
never know though, he could come alive in the playoffs? he certainly does have a knack for forcing fumbles but it definitely comes at a steep price more often than not.
and by the way, for my money, give me derron smith in the 3rd over any safety in this draft, he is one of the most natural ballhawks ive seen and his football IQ is at an NFL level already, in terms of being smart enough to step in and start on day 1, he is the CJ mosley of safeties and he may make it all the way to the 3rd round.
i was at the game yesterday and man he looked good. his very first series ever, he made all 3 plays and forced the 3 and out, one of the plays he made actually caused harbs to throw a challenge flag because it looked like a pick. he was flying around out there like a mad man and he plays with some serious swagger, also, the jags WR corps is nothing to sneeze at, without question the best part of their team and with marqise lee, cecil shorts, marcedes lewis at TE and even gerhart being an excellent 3DB, those guys were the threat in that game, and melvin was one of the factors that prevented that from being the san diego game all over again. dat boy good.
That hasn't been called in years. Also, we have done the same thing here in Baltimore. I think I remember on several occasions Leach pushing Flacco or Rice into the endzone.
i remember once i believe it was yanda actually wrapped up one of our RB's and flinging him into the endzone right before he wouldve ran into a defender. wish i could remember where i saw this lol
EDIT: it was the deciding run that got us into field goal range in the playoffs in denver, and i may have exaggerated a bit, he just tackled him forward as the tackler engaged ray lol.
but i do still feel like ive seen yanda wrap up a rb and drag him forward..
outdated rule i suppose, it happens in a ton of games every week, never gets called, and i dont blame em, if you cant shove the runner into the endzone, then what is the point of having 11 players on the field on a qb sneak?
11 defensive players are allowed to crowd around the center and try to rip the qb's head off, the 11 offensive players should be allowed to fight back, otherwise it would be 11 defenders vs a qb and a center essentially.
please do not try to use this as an excuse, we let their o-line dominate us physically and shove our interior line 5 yards deep, it was an embarrassment and we failed absolutely miserably.
didnt think for one second he would come here.
webb, jimmy, and flowers would all get near equal playing time if that were to happen, in this days nfl, 3rd CB is crucial because theyre on the field so much more often, webb is a starting caliber corner who is best in the slot and is a enforcer against the run as a CB, but with an injury history, so signing an ideal #2 CB like flowers allows us to monitor webbs snap count to hopefully help prevent another major injury, and he is also being used to his max potential, while flowers and jimmy are doing the same on the outside.
we would make LOB sit down and cry if we were to sign flowers.
all moot though, it wont happen.
wow. the trolling is unreal. unless this guy is just.. completely out of his mind.
theres no debate that torrey is elite, he clearly isn't, never will be, an elite receiver is a very rare thing.
doesn't mean its worth trading such a high character, local product, who is a very hard worker, big community guy, and clear cut leader and very respected voice in the locker room, who isn't even in his prime yet.
outrageous idea.
I did. I predicted him to us with our third round pick in one of my recent mocks. I won't lie I was pleasantly surprised after all the safeties flew off the board that he last until the third. That was a nice surprise.
yea i honestly thought he was worth a 2nd round pick. its a reach where we were picking though, and we got a first round talent in the mid 2nd, at the time though, i was not a happy camper. i was yelling at my tv "I GUESS ELAMS GONNA PLAY FREE AGAIN THIS YEAR" but the fact that he was still on the board in the third was shocking and picking him there made this draft look pretty brilliant
HAHAHA. I love people like you. Talk about the draft like you know everything when you really know nothing. Whelp. We got Brooks in the 3rd soooo.
HAHAHA no. i dont think most of us expected brooks to be there at 79. and if you looked at any posts i put up more recently, you'd see me say that after the terrence brooks, this whole draft started to make sense, and that it was a brilliant move to be so patient and stay so true to the board and end up getting a player we really wanted.
like the player, hate the pick. We slightly improved, when we could have improved drastically by getting an impact player at a huge position of need, Guys that would have been pretty good value picks as well. Not only will you be eatibg these words, but probably be wearing a Mosely jersey once you see him in Beastmode. Just chill and see
i am warming up to the mosley pick, but if we take kuandjio in the 2nd... thats a pick ill just never warm up to. seriously hope someone takes him before our pick because im worried ozzie will double dip his pen in the bama ink with him
Because apparently our FO thought he was better than both of them. Elam will be the face of this defense for the future, and I bet he plays SS this year no matter what.
i sure hope so, he is a machine at SS, but definitely lacking in that over the top coverage we were asking him to do. i just dont exactly see who is supposed to play FS for us unless darian stewart is alot better than we all think he is
People just want something to complain about. When it comes to the draft, if the guy who they wanted wasn't the pick it's a bad pick. Your right about Mosley and remember guys, Ozzie doesn't just draft for the now, but for 2, 3, 4 years in the future. Smith won't be around in a couple years. Mosley and Brown can make a solid 1-2 punch at ILB for us. In fact I love how our front seven would look now....
Suggs D. Smith Mosley Doom
Ngata Williams Canty
I'd be happy if we can land Lee, Hageman, Tuitt or even Jordan Matthews at 48 tomorrow night.
not exactly, ive been vocally against HHCD but I still had my fingers crossed that we took him when he slid all the way to us, I thought that was a huge value and filled our biggest need, big marquise lee fan, I lobbied for him to be our top pick for a while but I was happy we didn't reach for him there, I thought a CB would've been better, im surprised mosley was above Dennard on ozzies board. there were plenty of players I thought were possible, this was the only one I wouldnt have been happy with. although the idea is starting to sing in a little, I just hope hes healthy.
solid pick.
we are set long term with brown and mosley and both will learn from smith.
also both smith can play as olb in coverage so i can only imagine the coverage lbers cand provide us now.
also people jimmy ward is a freaking SS.
we did not need him since elam is a SS.
niners picked him to replace withner who played SS.
they have Reid who they drafted last year who plays FS.
seriously what is so hard to understand ????
we need a FS and people cry we did not draft a SS long.
SMH
jimmie ward is a deep coverage guy and ballhawk.. FS is clearly his natural position.
Ozzie and Decosta had Cj Mosely quite high on their big board...most likely at number 1 and obviously higher than ClintonDix. BPA is BPA and Ozzie should have that mantra tattooed on his chest by now.
If this pick was last year everyone in the state of Maryland would be doing backflips and jumping for joy. We left last years draft with a so-so project MLB in Arthur Brown in what was a weak ILB draft class. The fact that we could come in here and finally solidify that position for the future is definitely not a bad way to go. Really the only knocks on Mosely are injury concerns and athleticism questions, he is a very talented MLB who we will most likely get some good use out of this year.
yea I exeaggerated that a little lol the shock was still wearing off. I just think safety was such a dire need, because we are wasting a first round draft pick as long as elam is playing at FS, and what I thought was our teams dream scenario played out, I figured they didn't see HHCD dropping to 17, and when he made it there I figured that pick would be in before dallas announced their pick. cant say I was surprised because its such a typical ozzie move, but I can say I still cant believe that both safeties fell to us and he passed on both of them.
on the bright side, marquise lee has officially slipped to the 2nd round. I would be high as a kite to think he would slip anywhere near our pick, but maybe if he slides a little too far then ozzie pulls the trigger?or on latimer? or maybe we just hold tight and reach for Terrence brooks, or we hope that moses falls to us, or we get the steal of the draft in Jordan Matthews if he falls that far.
although if we ignore WR in the 2nd, and Jarvis landry is there in the 3rd, I would boycott the season if we passed on him.
ward off the boards at 30, and I was PRAYING for ozzie to trade up to NE or SF and take ward, and boom, SF takes him. so, what in the hell are we gonna do about safety now???
I understandmosley may have been your BPA, but FS is such a ridiculously big need for us, that I just don't see how we passed up both of the safeties. where else are we gonna address this? pick up a scrub or washed up vet who gets cut after training camp so he can come in and be a liability? I know Terrence brooks wont be ozzies BPA in the 2nd, and he wont be there in the 3rd, so we either trust darian stewart(which I don't) or we go with elam at FS again and waste his talent.
Also people crying about need, look at the teams that draft off need where are they now? Still picking high in the draft not knowing how to follow their board... And remember nothing says we cant trade back into the first and grab an area of need.
did you see ozzie in a press conference expressing how much he loves picks? the odds are slim to none. to only possible trade into the first would be if all the first round WR's are off the board and jim says to john "i owe ya one for the hookup on boldin" and gives us a solid deal that doesn't involve trading our 2nd rounder
And now everyone will hate on Ozzie. This is BPA. Great pick. Him and Elam will be the face of our defense for the next 10 years. We will get a safety/RT in the 2nd. Don't hate on this move, I think it was a very good one. We fixed the offense, our defense has some holes.
elam wont be the face of our defense as long as he isn't playing in his real position. drafting pryor or Clinton dix allows elam to be the tackling machine he is, instead of forcing him to be a coverage liability, and I don't see how mosley is gonna be placed above BOTH of them in terms of BPA.

and i would certainly agree and im not exactly saying hes better than cary williams, just what hes shown us looks better than what we saw from cary williams, just about any player can step in and play solid and jam up some receivers for a few weeks but consistency after youre on the radar is another story.
