Well, lets face it... if Jacoby was playing a key role in our offense, we were doomed to begin with.
I think the plan was to have Stokely and Clark play a key roles in the offense, but that never happened. During the preseason and in the first half of that game Jones looked like he was finally going to be a decent number 2 receiver. And like someone else brought up, Clark dropping a touchdown pass and Harbs never challenging an incomplete pass to Welker really helped the Broncos come back and win that game.
Well, depth wins championships - but the pre-season seemed to indicate that we don't have a deep threat depth behind Perriman. Marlon's catch was really a thing of beauty - but it was against backups, and one catch all pre-season... We either don't have a legit backup for Perriman's eep threat abilities, or we did a tremendous job concealing it
Do we have a legitimate deep threat after Perriman? No,not really. We have seen Steve Smith run a deep route from time to time and Waller has decent speed but nothing on the same level as Perriman.
Everyone needs to relax about that deep threat talk.
A. Most teams don't have a legitimate deep threat
B. Before Torrey the Ravens went years without a deep threat, and still had a successful running game(something everyone seems to bring up when they talk about having a deep threat)
Yes, having a deep threat helps, and you are using Joe's strengths when you have a receiver that can get behind a defense, but its not necessary. Trestman is just going to have to change up his game plan. Last season the Bears used a lot of comeback routes, so he might rely on things like that to help Brown, Waller and Aiken get open. But I think Forsett, Gillmore, and Campanaro will be important parts of the offense. Glllmore and Forsett will have to take advantage of mismatches and Campanaro will have to find holes in defenses to get open.
Don't think he was ever in a boot and if I recall that comment mentioned he was walking around the field catching balls. Not running or jogging. Found it:
Perriman walking thru routes, working on over the shoulder catches... No jogging or running tho #RavensTalk
Sorry, i guess that was wishful thinking.
But Hensley did report that he was seen in a walking boot during a Eagles practices. I believe that was the same day that he reported that Perriman had a PCL sprain.
I decided to break this down (2013 opener) to see if there was a difference in his stats after we were getting blown out...
1st quarter... 11/15, 82 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
2nd quarter... 7/17, 101 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
3rd quarter... 4/14, 43 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
4th quarter... 12/20, 136 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
So basically, 1st half, while the game was competitive (we were actually winning), he was 18/32 for 183 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
2nd half, game largely out of reach by mid-3rd quarter, he was 16/34 for 179 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
Looks pretty consistent, although we were down by 18 going into the fourth quarter, so not really sure what to make of his 4th quarter stats.
Though if you look at it, 2nd and 3rd quarters, he was pretty terrible... 11/31, 144 yards and 1 INT. We were outscored 35-10 during those 2 quarters.
Not to put all the blame on Joe though...
In the third quarter of that game, where we were outscored 21-0, we had five possessions. We ran 18 offensive plays TOTAL in those five possessions, and gained a total of 32 yards on those 18 offensive plays.
Do you people remember this game? Jacoby Jones going down really hurt the offense. Flacco looked like he could keep up with Manning, until he went down. The defense was able to double cover Smith and put pressure on Flacco because Rice wasn't doing anything and Brown and Stokely(who was was looking his age) were the only other receivers.
True but he could say how it feels. Is he running? Jogging? In constant pain. Anything would be nice.
Didn't they say he was jogging around catch balls before the game against the Falcons?
I don't know how much that helps. All that tells me is he is out of the boot.
This whole Perriman injury sucks - there has been no mention of him playing this weekend or in the near future
Yesterday Harbaugh basically said that it seems unlikely that he will play this weekend since he hasn't practiced. He is doing what every other coach in the NFL will do, give as little information as possible. Like Hensely wrote the other day, based on the idea that he had a PCL sprain (not confirmed by the team, but what most people are speculating) the soonest he would return to the practice field is next week. But it could be a few more weeks and than you have to see how he looks once he can actually practice. Most guesses are saying he won't return until October.
Those two don't necessarily contradict. I myself think we are the definite underdogs this Sunday, still I think we have a better chance to go further at the end then the Broncos. Why? This Sunday it will be a fresh, rested, motivated Peyton with a fresh, rested, motivated Broncos playing at home in a weather that really suits Peyton. Fast forward to January... a worn down Peyton in a january weather...
Now the other side: one of Flacco's obvious weaknesses is early road games. He won 3 of his 7 first road games of the season - and one of those (the 10-9 W over the Jets in 2010) was almost exclusively courtesy of the running game and the D. Flacco is a notorious slow starter on the road. Also, no matter how much Trestman is trying to build on Kubiak's O, it's still gonna be a new O, in real game situation for the first time. We can all remember Kubiak's first game as our OC - a hgely underwhelming first half, until it finally started to click in the second... Fast forward to January: it's Flacco's "natural habitat", when he is usually at his best. The whole Ravens programme is built around January football...
So, we can easily be the underdogs this coming Suday, still the favouriter over the Broncos on the long run.
Yes, Flacco can be a slow starter in away games, but that first game of the season Flacco is usually on fire. In 2012 and 2013, to start the season, Flacco beat the snot out of the Steelers and the Bengals. Yes, in 2014 they lost to the Bengals but that wasn't on Flacco. He looked great, it was the receivers that looked terrible. I think there were 7 dropped passes in the first half. I believe it was 3 by Steve Smith, 2 by Jacoby Jones, 1 by Torrey Smith and 1 by Pitta. Those numbers might be off a little bit, but that gives you an idea of how bad they were. And go back and look the 10-9 win over the Jets. Rice had 43yds on 21 carries. It was Flacco that was 20-38 and 249yds, Those aren't great stats, but they are decent for going against a strong defense and I remember Cromartie was flagged a few times for PI. They should have had another TD during that game but Boldin broke in and Flacco threw it to the outside and Cromartie intercepted it, i believe at the 2 yd line.
So where exactly is Charles James since he's not on the 10 man PS?
I believe with Urban going on IR they have an open roster spot that will either go to James, McGee, or Ross.
The Ravens should trade a draft pick for Tavon Austin. He could be our kick returner, slot WR, and catch balls out of the backfield like sproles.
so what pick do you think it will cost and how realistic does it seem that ozzie would trade that pick?
right now i think the rams want at least a 2nd.
dont see that happening....
It sounds good in theory, but it's not like Austin has been a good player. As a receiver he has averaged 330yds the past two years, and in that time he has fumbled 8 balls while returning punts. Are we hoping he will look better on a new team?
It would be nice to have a backup for Campanaro, but I don't know if it's worth a draft pick(definitely nothing higher than a fourth rounder) and the salary hit.
Did he not get hurt the first day?
Yeah, I don't remember if it was the first official day, or the first day open to the media, but I know it was that first week.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens put Perriman on the PUP list for return after game six. I don't see how he could be much more than an over the top decoy for the first few games anyway.
its too late for that. Since he particpated in training camp he is no long eligable for the PUP list. The only option is IR designated to return. But you can only do that with one player and I think he has to be out 8 weeks.
Did you guys even watch the Ravens SB run?. Some players are better when the pressure is the highest.
My comment is completely based on his performance from last season, it has nothing to do with 3 years ago.
Honeslty wasnt really impressed with Aiken or Brown thus far. Looking for SSS, BP, and Camp to steal the show. Waller is moving up the board as well
People want to make a big deal out of it, but those three, Forsett and Gillmore will be the teams top receivers. Everyone else is just complementary pieces.
Personally, with Waller playing so well recently I don't think it makes any sense to keep Brown. The only argument to keep him is he has played for the Ravens for a few years, and he had a good season, two years ago. He did nothing last season, he has been the underachiever in training camp, and during the preseason he has two catches and a pass interference call that cost the Ravens a touchdown.
Its actually ironic i bet if ozzie had to choose between shane ray randy gregory before their issues and melvin gordon more than likely never would have picked up perriman and would have got sammie coates in the second round there was a reason why perriman was available and obviously now we see why because of his genetic condition along side the mental drops no one thought he was a first round talent except ozzie bc if that were the case the wr needy teams like arizona and minnesota would have taken him first round
So.....perrimans still not practicing/playing?....what a surprise...where's all the "head in the sand" fans that said he's be ready??...Out for the year at best!....Get real, we made another 1st rd mistake at WR and should Never make that mistake again......I wonder if he could....well never mind i don't think he's qualified for that position either......Keep Tom Nelson!
Are you people real? The guy has a pcl sprain and it takes a few weeks to get better. Yes, i was hoping he would be back by now, because he is hurting his progression, but I am realistic and realize that this is part of the normal healing process.
So Ozzie made a mistake because the guy hurt is leg in training camp? Does that mean the Bears made a huge mistake because their rookie receiver will miss the entire season?
Take a minute and look up PCL sprain, under causes you might find this " In football, this may happen when a running back's knee lands directly on the turf. " So its a normal injury that is known to happen while playing football and his previous knee issues have nothing to do with this injury.
How quickly you guys forget that Jacoby had a similar sprain during the 2013 and he missed about 5 weeks so give the guy a break... he was out there practicing... and sprained it laying out to make a play... its not like he did it horsing around... or falling down... so please let the young man at least have the opportunity to play before judgement is passed..
I am glad some of the fans are being realistic about this injury. I guess because it was original said to be a bruise fans are ignoring the fact that it was said awhile ago that it was a sprain.
So is Ozzie gonna try get Tim Jennings?
Can he return punts?
Looking at the Bears roster, after Jennings and seeing there is a bunch of nobodies I would be worried what Jennings has left in the tank. If they sign him is he going to beat Smith,Webb, Arrington or Melvin for their spot? After that guys are going to be expected to play special teams.
Ozzie has shocked us before and its always nice to have extra corners(especially after last season), but as of right now I am saying, probably not.
The problem here is that Jacoby was cut because there was no roster spot for a player who's "only" contribution is kick returning. And neither Patterson nor Holliday showed much in terms of receiving last season. So, to cut Jacoby because he doesn't show enough as a WR, then bringing in a guy who would offer the same doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
That said, I'd be happy to see a return specialis hauled in. Asa is not the solution - and he' not even a good CB.
He also made bad decisions when he was returning kicks.
I know what your sayin but I don't really think even if rg3 did get injured that people would come to that assumption. Rg3 is now so known for being fragile and gets knocked around like a rag doll- plus most all analysts know better than to make an accusation like that, which is why the majority took up for Suggs the other week. Ofcourse there are always a few bad apples in every bunch that pull stuff out of their behind, but i kind of wish rg3 would have played so our defense could have had a feild day and took advantage of his vulnarability. Could have been good for morale. But either way we can do the same thing to cousins or McCoy I suppose & I agree nothing really matters except Denver.
Lets not forget, we have Keap and Wilson this season, So its nice to go against a running qb during the preseason, just to get the defense ready for anything. But RG3 definitely hasn't been the same since the Ngata hit. Before that hit I would have rated him above both Keap and Wilson, Now there's no way anyone would do that. And it seems like the head coach is trying to make him more of a pocket passer.
At this point I think it is down to Marlon Brown or Jeremy Butler making the roster. Smith, Perriman and Aiken are locks. Campanaro and Waller are making strong cases right now in the preseason. The Ravens won't keep 4 tight ends and 7 receivers.... So I think they do keep 6 receivers and with Marlon's injury and Butler lackluster practices recently (even though he did have a great mini camp back in June) my guesssit is Butler is going to be cut and unfortunate because he has a great upside. They will try to sign Butler and Carter to the practice squad but we all know one or both will probably be signed to another team and they have that talent to be situational players on another team. Carolina with their injury to Kelvin Benjamin would probably love to have Butler as their slot guy.
I agree with you, the last roster spot will probably come down to Butler and Brown, but I have Butler winning. Until this week Butler's catches have been mentioned in almost every camp note post since June, So he isn't making the roster because he has had a quiet week? While Brown has been on the team for 3 years and has yet to learn how to use his size to beat the players covering him. He isn't making an impact during practices, and he has had injury problems since his college years(maybe earlier). Brown has gone from a lock to make the team to probably not making the team.
I can't be the only one that read "his next time through caught a pass against Marc Anthony over the middle" and thought there is no way there are two corners named Marc Anthony(even though there were two receivers named Steve Smith). As turns out this is the same corner the Ravens drafted in 2013, but was cut before the season started.
Campanaro, Perriman, and Darren Waller starting Wrs for the future. :-)
That is a good possibility. The other day someone brought up the idea of Perriman and Waller as the starters next season and all I could think of is Perriman and Campanaro could be the Raven's version of Welker and Moss.
It wasn't too long ago that fans were saying the Ravens should drop Camp and I kept talking about how last season he was one of the team's best receivers and it doesn't make sense to drop him right now. But I guess I was wrong about Waller. I always saw him as a project that the team would have to stash on IR. Between the fact that he was still a very raw player and he struggled with drops earlier in the offseason I thought he wasn't going to make the cut. Right now I think he slips in and Brown might be the odd man out.
Am i the only one that had no idea that Ryan Matthews was still in the league?
Raven fans are always talking about Smith and Webb being injured, the Eagles have Bradford(starting qb, Murray(starting running back) and Matthews(3rd running back in the depth chart) who are all known to be injury prone. I don't think Bradford or Matthews have made it through a season without missing significant time and I believe last season is the only time Murray remained healthy all season.
Yeah, me too...
I remember when he shrugged off Lee Evans' injury saying it's a minor thing, a couple of days tops. Evans missed months. (well, luckily for us, i might add, as his absence gave way to Torrey's historic 3 TD debut and what followed...)
People keep bringing up the Lee Evans thing but they forget it looked like a minor thing, and after a few days of rest he started playing again, but he wasn't his usual quick self and that's when him missed months of practices and games.
I will be really concerned if he Perriman is not back by next game. But I am really liking Darren Waller and looking forward to him having another productive game. Waller 6'6 235lb 4.3 speed special talent has shown best of the other WRs, with penalties drawn on defendwrs, catches, etc Waller will be on this team, unless the ravens are dumb
I still think the guy ends up on IR this season. He is still a very raw player, on a team with a bunch of young receivers that have done more with their opportunities. He has the size and speed to give most defenses fits but he has to learn how to use that size and speed before he becomes an effective receiver.
Remember, that was the second and third team they were playing against. If anything, it means we are not very deep and the backups need valuable playing time to improve.
Was I the only one that was surprised to see Cooks(the Saints player that caught their first touchdown) still in the game? Last preseason there was a lot of hype around Cooks and I figured, part of the reason they were okay with trading Stills to the Dolphins is they figured Cooks would help pick up the load he left behind.

Yeah, pretty much what I have been saying. You adjust your game plan. Smith, and Camp will have to use the route running skills while Aiken, Brown and Waller use their size to get open and rely on the tight ends and running backs to play a larger part of the passing game. A deep threat isn't needed, but its a nice weapon to have at your disposal.
But I have seen Flacco over throw Smith and Jones just as much as he has under thrown to them. The under throw passes are more memorable because they are able to adjust to them, while you can't really adjust to an over throw. You just have to hope you can get close enough to get your finger tips on them.
