When organizing contracts, teams use a combination of what a player has already done with what they can do in the future. There does come a point where that gets old, because I don't think anyone here will say that we should bring back Lewis was he was the DPLOY in 2000 and 2003. Yet JJ's production over the last two years is recent enough that it can be used as an argument. If a team did not use the past as a reference when working contracts, how would it know who do sign and to what?
