  1. Our WR screens have to be one of the least effective weapons in our offenses arsenal. The last one I remember working well I think was the 11 AFCCG where Torrey went for a td.

I think Perriman will change that. His acceleration is insane, which should allow him to beat the first man, and with the size and athleticism of our Tackles, Guards, TE and other WRs it should be fairly routine to get blockers into the second level. With that formula, the WR screen should become a powerful weapon for us. Especially to jumpstart our offense if we begin to stall.

  2. think his drops where more a mental issue with lack of concentration or already thinking about what to do before he caught the ball rather then it being a case of not attack the ball at its highest point or using his body to make catches.

Yea to me it was less lack of concentration and more just putting too much pressure on himself at first, and then losing his confidence when he wasn't able to overcome it. Some of those drops last year were just painful to watch.

  3. The tragedy about suggs is he's so phenomonal at run defense which I don't think gets a lot of consideration in NFL consideration.

Yea I think it could be a gift or a curse for Suggs. While he's been playing, surely he's been overlooked because he's "only" a "very good" pass rusher, but an outstanding run defender. However, if this is true how did he win DPOY with 14 sacks when JPP has 16.5 and Allen had a whopping 22? I think they saw one guy with a couple a tools (Allen) and another with a complete set (Suggs) and went with the better football player. To me, that was the turning point at least in the eyes of the media. I think Sizzle is seen as a complete player and we, as a fanbase, maybe hold onto a little bit of the inferiority complex we had about Sizz before he won that award. Since 2011 though, I think Suggs has been well respected as an absolute monster and a football player's football player. Give it a year and I think we're making friendly...estimates about what ballot he goes in on, not whether or not he makes it.

  4. I'm not sure that it's more demanding than any other position especially when you consider running back and inside linebacker taking hits like they do. Corners are more slightly built and while Jimmy is on the larger side of the position, his injuries seem more conditioning related. Webby is small-ish for the NFL and it seem that no amount of conditioning would prepare him for a long and health football career. Still his ACLs and back issues seem more due to conditioning. Jackson (concussion/Knee)...he's small like Webby, Brooks (MCL/PCL)...another knee. Gorrer (MCL/PCL and Groin)...yet another knee. Then you get a hard hitter like Will Hill who's an average size for SS and he's fine. Even Darian Stewart was health for 16 games for the for the frst time ever playing both FS and SS last year.

I guess working through this I'm seeing that the DBs need to strengthen the muscles in their lower lower bodies and their knees in particular.

Webb tore his ACLs and Jimmy broke his foot because of poor conditioning?!?! What?

  5. Dumervil not a HOF consideration? ORLY?? He has as good of a shot as Suggs does and Suggs is a lock even if not first ballot.

Dume has 10 less sacks than Suggs but came into the league 3 years after him and being just a year younger. He has 4 Pro Bowls, 2 first team All Pros, NFL Pass Rusher of the Year, Sack leader 2009, and had 17 sacks last year with an eye on th record this year. He's on par to at least match Suggs' career production so you can't include one in the HOF without the other.

It also needs to be said they that they each have a quite a few seasons of football left in the tank. I could see either/both playing until 35-36. Neither has shown signs of slowing down even after major injuries (Suggs-AchilliesDume-Pectoralis). No way there's any serious consideration as to how they DON'T make it - only pewwrhaps as to WHEN...if they don't start slapping women around.

Are they Lawrence Taylor? No, not yet. But their production to this point is close enough. If Suggs managed just 7 sacks for the next 4 years (he's averaged 9) he'd have 2 more career sacks than LT. If Dume averages just 8 for the next 5 years (he averages 10 to date) he'd have 2 less than LT. If they do better than 10 sacks in any given year they'll likely get selected to Pro Bowls and could realistically each still see up to 8 or so in their careers. REMEMBER: Pro Bowl and HOF selections are largely popularity driven contests as much as being stat driven. In a sack driven league, they'll garner enough respect and good will to gain both.

I just can't believe there is any real doubt on this topic.

Doom has as good of a shot at the HOF as Suggs? Doom needs another monster sack season AND a ring to even be in the discussion. Coming to Baltimore definitely rejuvenated his career, but let's not forget why he was available in the first place. Not many future Hall of Famers are asked to take pay cuts in the middle of their primes. Doom is a one-dimensional player in the perfect situation for his one dimension. He will need a to do a lot more, and outside of the sack category, to be considered HOF eligible.

  6. everything both of you said makes a lot of sense . Can't argue with the numbers . But I never really thought that brown should be playing infront of any of them bc quite frankly they are better than him. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have talent and potential. At this point He's a solid #3 guy at best. But like I was saying, Atleast harbaugh and SSS seem to believe that he got put on the back burner bc of the arrival of SSS. However Whether or not they were just saying that is certainly debatable.

Yea I mean I'm probably being a little hard on Brown but I had really high hopes for him last season and by midway I just felt let down. More than anything I want a higher caliber of receiver across the board. Hopefully we hit on a couple young guys over the next 2-3 offseasons, starting with Perriman this year, and overhaul our WR corps in the same way we did our OL.

  7. well obviously the coaches think that way even if some of us fans don't. Marlon had a big rookie year- and then came in Steve Smith SENIORITY. Torrey was our first round pick that we had invested in and were trying to develop into a # 1 reciever and jacoby jones was still hanging on to the phenomenal playoff run from 2012 and everybody was hoping that guy would come back to stay. He showed flashes and then eventually stalled out. All of this was going on while at the same time kubiak is a run first coordinator and was having strong succuss with Forsett. Basically the way I see it brown kind of just got put on the back burner.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Marlon got put on the back burner." He played 36% of the receiving snaps which was 3rd on the team. With about 35+% fewer snaps (26% to Marlon's 35% of the total) Aiken had one more target than Brown (37 to 36, IIRC) and about 10 more yards. Breaking it down even further:

-Aiken and Brown essentially shared the WR3 spot (the idea that Jacoby was gifted the WR3 position is a myth as he played 183 receiving snaps (18%), about half of Brown's and 100 or so less than Aiken. Camp wasn't on the field enough to be considered a true snap drain). Kubiak also ran fairly basic route combinations in his offense, so the WR3 in any given set ran essentially the same routes no matter whom the body was (Brown, Aiken, Campanaro or Jacoby)

-It stands to reason, then, that given the exact same types of routes as Brown, with significantly fewer opportunities to run them, Aiken performed essentially exactly the same if not better (Also factor in that he playd 280 ST snaps to Brown's 78)

So why did Joe clearly prefer to target Aiken when he was on the field? Why was Aiken the one to sub for Torrey at WR2 when he got a little banged up mid-late season? Why would the Ravens put Brown, with a year of experience and chemistry with Joe, on the back burner and give the chances to Aiken instead?

From where I'm sitting, the only answer that resolves all three of those questions is that Marlon did not capitalize on his opportunities when he was on the field. This notion that Joe, Kubes, and Harbs just forgot about the guy because we brought in Steve Smith just doesn't bear scrutiny.

  8. Not only will he make the team, but he has a very good chance of being the #2 WR when the season starts.

I dunno man. You keep bringing up Steve Smith and Jacoby. Let's make a more direct comparison to another player in essentially the exact same position as Brown:

    Brown 2014:

    Offensive Snaps(In 16 games)- 375

    Yards Receiving- 255

    Aiken 2014:

    Offensive Snaps(In 18 games)- 276

    Yards Receiving- 267

Add in the fact that Aiken played 260 special teams snaps to Brown's 78...to me it's crystal clear which player is better. Same offense, same position, same QB, same OC, AND with the benefit of a year of chemistry to his advantage I'm not sure why there's such a strong desire to call Brown's play in 2014 anything but a huge disappointment.

  9. I can tell you from playing hockey that it's absolutely grueling to play. You're on ice, which is already a very hard surface, and getting pounded into boards and thrown onto ice. Not to mention if you fight, it's just a five minute major. I mean, it's a very taxing sport. You also have stuff like this happening...

I think NFL players could take a few extra games. They'd need to add a second bye week later in the season, but they could take two to four more games, in my opinion. It'd definitely be nice to have football season be longer.

Oh no I understand. My point is not that hockey isn't physically demanding, of course it is and immensely so. My point is that trying to say hockey players play 82 and therefore football players are babies for not wanting to go above 16 operates from a false premise. In reference to that link, I'll give you that hockey players have grit (as do football players, see: Mason, Derrick), but honestly I think that culture is arcane and frankly a little silly. I like a bit of violence as much as the next guy but when you start to border on blood sport and you're being applauded for how few teeth you have...I think you need to reassess your priorities lol.

And the "fights?" Just a flat out waste of time. Getting way OT here though...Trestman coached in the Canada though so....that's something lol.

  10. Yeah I can't stand it when people refer to the NFL as a long grueling season.

The NHL is just as physical and they play 82 games with a playoff that lasts from April until June.

Cry me a river, these guys are the most pampered babies out there.

Apples and oranges. Hockey players are on skates, have far more padding on their bodies, and play in controlled environments.

The body issue isn't about skill players it's about linemen. You don't have 300 lb men trying to dominate each other on every play in hockey. You would need a second shift of lineman if you added many more games and there aren't enough athletic 300 pounders to round out the starting lines of all 32 teams, so much as a whole second group of them.

  11. The last thing the Ravens or Waller need is an IR situation for him. It's work and experience that is going to transform him.

If the Ravens were to seriously consider an IR stunt, I'd prefer we release him and let him fulfill his promise elsewhere.

You can't coach speed and size, all he needs are reps.

Agree. So if SSS, Perriman, and Waller all make it and you only carry 6, you've got a tight completion between 4 guys (I don't consider Carter a serious prospect this season, has PS written all over him unless he runs multiple kicks back in preseason) for 3 spots. I think everyone agrees that Aiken will make a push, so the question becomes who you like best of Butler, Camp, and Brown? If say right now it's Brown > Butler > Campanaro with Brown ahead of Butler by a small margin, but I see Butlers stock rising whereas Marlon's is standing still. Camp's stock is falling but if he's fully healthy when we cut to 53 he makes the team. So assuming Camp is healthy for the sake of argument, it's Brown vs. Butler in a dog fight.

  12. Trestman's offense allows for a smart QB to really take chances. Flacco is a really smart QB and despite being a risk taker, he's usually very smart with the ball. I think what Trestman will do for Flacco much like Kubes did is create space for easier throws so that he doesn't have to make as many tight window throws and his int totals will drop even more.

What Flacco will do for Trestman much like he did for Kubes is give him a QB that really takes his offense to the next level. Trestman had the perfect mix of QBs in Chi with Mccown being smart and Cutler having the huge arm to get down field and take those tight chances when needed. However only one of those guys could play at a time obviously. Flacco combines both traits and he's just a winner which really can't be said for either of those guys. This offense is perfect for Flacco and Marc seems to be the perfect teacher.

I think in 2015 there will be 2 guys who really step up and have big seasons in Trestman's offense. Marlon Brown and Crocket Gilmore. These are two guys who all the coaches seem really excited about but they seem to be not talked about as much by fans. Of course everyone expects Maxx to be good being a 2nd round pick but Gilmore's big body could create such a huge matchup probalem for LBs and Safeties. He's never really gotten credit for his pass catching but he's really good at it and especially in the red zone. I don't expect him to become one of the top TEs in the NFL but i think he'll definitely develop in a complete TE under Trestman.

Marlon Brown is a guy i can see Trestman using a lot like he used Marshall in Chi. He will be allowed to work inside and out to take advance of poor matchups. His hard work in the run game will actually be a major benefit on play action plays. Not sure why Kubes didn't use play action as much last season nor did he utilize Brown in the redzone but i think both of those areas will be a huge par of the offense and Brown will benefit from the extra targets. I see Brown really taking those snaps away from Smitty to keep him fresh for the playoff run. Then next season it'll be Perriman and Brown at the top of the WR group.

Trestman's offense is a great fit all around imo.

Crockett I can see...but you foresee Brandon Marshall-like play out of Marlon Brown? I really, in my heart of hearts, think you're in for a huge letdown from MB but time will tell.

  13. For me its the receivers - we are going to carry 7 this year just no way we can narrow it down to 6 the question is who is #7

Right now its Smith, Perriman, Aiken, Brown, Camp, Waller, and Butler but if Camp is hurt that opens it up for Carter because we do need a return man.

Also looking forward to the saga of Dennis Pitta and whether or not he returns. If not, I think Gilmore is really turning it up and will outperform expectations.

Finally, just how good can this D Line be - it is chock full of high ceiling young guys who are all hitting years 2 or 3 and healthy so Jernigan, Williams, Davis, Urban, KLM, and company could be an extremely talented and deep position group.

Yea similar to BmoreBird's post I just don't think we can afford to carry 7 Wides. If you're carrying 7 you're giving up either an OLB or a CB and those positions are more important than a 7th receiver. We're probably looking at IR for Waller, Worthy and/or Campanaro or, if all those guys stay healthy, a tough choice between Butler/Campanaro/Brown for which two make it. Worthy I think will be PS or IR. If Waller isn't IR'd I can't see us cutting him unless he shows no talent whatsoever. And if Camp goes to PS he's gone.
