Sure, I'm going to spend a massive amount of time on a game with someone who refuses to spell our team's name correctly. SMH!

Is Elam now one of those 'bad-boy' players that the Ravens so desperately need?

I don't think I want to know the answer to that. Thanks for capitalizing.

The early rounds need to get worked out, but as of now we should stick with the comp formula because the 4th and 5th is where we make our money. We have done Maybe better than any team in the late rounds, but picks like kindle, cody, Upshaw, elam, brown, Brooks, and potentially maxx and Correa(this far at least) are really clouding his track record. Mosley, jernigan, perriman, and Stanley have his track record on the uptick, assuming they all progress. If he can get a good first 2 rounds in this upcoming draft I think people start slowing their roll when calling for ozzies head. He got lost in the retirement frenzy trying to replace guys, hopefully learned his lesson, and is fixing the mistakes. The real challenge comes now though, our roster is gonna be seriously lacking in 2 years and he needs to prepare for that while also building our present team, and he has to do so with average value picks and no more low-value holes to fill, most of our holes are in the high value sexy positions and we have no means of addressing them.

I really don't even blame Ozzie for how poor that draft was as a whole. We got Juice, Williams and Wagner in that crap shoot. I'll take it.

Getting awarded a pick and you still complain because we let a guard go who got offered LT money for G, makes sense. I bet you would complain about a 98 yard TD because it wasn't a 99 yard TD. I love it.

Flacco's contract isn't hurting the Ravens as much as people think. Over the first 3 years of the original contract, Flacco's cap hit was really team friendly. Since signing Flacco to the original contract, the team signed, Pitta, Jimmy, Monroe, Yanda, Tucker, Koch and Weddle to big deals. That doesn't include locking up guys like Zuttah, Wright, SSS, Forsett and Watson to deals that weren't big but the team thought these players would contribute a lot. They also made competitive offers to Torrey and KO. Flacco's contract hasn't hurt the team, that's just the perception going around. What has hurt the Ravens is these long term commitments and young draft picks not playing well over the last 3-4 years. The Ravens have been among the top of the league in dead money over the last 3-4 years because of poor contracts. Injuries have hurt as well. Flacco certainly has to play better and play up to his contract, but he hasn't stopped the team from signing anyone. Boldin was traded because the Ravens didn't think he could perform as well moving forward. Torrey wasn't a guy the Ravens would pay 10Mil for, especially since they have so much success getting close to over the hill WRs who can perform just as well as Torrey and no way they were paying KO LT money without being 100% sure he was the answer there which no one could honestly say. Seeing Flacco struggle on a huge contract sucks, but the reality is, the Ravens don't commit big money to outside players often and the guys they wanted to keep here they have. Flacco has to play better, but the Ravens were banking on guys like Perriman, Maxx, Brooks, Elam, Davis, Smith, Timmy, Taliafero, Buck and others to really step their games up and be the new era of players to keep the team performing well and that just hasn't happened.

Would love to have Mangold playing beside Yanda. That would be nasty! (and in Greg Romans system)!
  17. 3 points
Signing Mangold would have more impact on the upcoming season than any of the other players being "associated" with the Ravens in the free agent market. Since we are joined at the hip with Flacco for three more years due to the dead money involved, we need to try to get him to play better than the 24th ranked (QBR) player at his position. Mangold seems like the best option I have seen thus far.

wasn't elam switched? KC is another example. i think art brown was another too. waller has been playing decent in limited snaps.

@52520Andrew and I have an idea but it was too late to implement this year. Once things die down I can explain it in the CoCo thread, and maybe we can run a test for like final, final free agency or something.

the jets players and management speak about brandon marshall as a model teammate. he has been active in the community and has spoken up about his past to encourage other young knuckleheads to shape up. not sure where youre getting some of that from. but i also would prefer robert woods, hes a very underrated wr in this league whos been stuck in a bad situation, and would bring a lot of what were missing, refined savvy route running and quality hands/ball skills.
  26. 3 points
He had 17 run stops and 13 missed tackles. He takes bad angles very often. He's had problems in man coverage too when asked to cover a tight end one on one. He's only seemed to make plays when hes the center fielder. Qbs underestimated his range and thanks to his athleticism he was able to make the play. He's only played one year as a college safety before that he was a basketball player. He has a lot he needs to work on and will be a project in the NFL. Teams need to be careful with players who come in with super high expectations. Hookers just not there yet. I'm not questioning the talent or potential, I just think it will take one or two years for him to get acclimated to the NFL. Ohio state simplified things for their inexperienced defense. He's gonna have to learn an nfl playbook and I doubt he's really had to learn much from a playbook considering his extremely short football career

Lol....yeah that's not true, "much better" is a huge exaggeration. Q had more targets/receptions with those teams as they featured the pass more, but his YPC were as high/higher in Bmore as any point of his career. Housh? Lee Evans? Seriously? Gimme a break. LMAO! And Todd was a shell of his former self, beaten and battered, by the time Flacco arrived. Pretty much FALSE on all counts. lol

i doubt we use it to trade up. i actually could see us trade back and end up with 3 thirds or 2 seconds.

I wish fans would realize that Flacco isn't going anywhere for awhile, and we would be dumb to let him go....

The flacco contract definitely is hurting us. In fact I would say that probably no other contract in the NFL is handcuffing their team worse. But I still would not call that Ozzies biggest mistake. IDK... Boller comes to mind. Allowing Harbs to bring Dean Pees in comes to mind... The Webb contract is up there. The Pitta contract is also up there. All the guaranteed money on the Ray Rice deal hurt us badly over the past two years. Sergio Kindle hurt us... But Flacco has produced (albeit not up to his contract) but he has produced. So... as much as his contract holds the team hostage... I cant call it Ozzie's worst move... but its top 10 for sure!

Assuming he's healthy 1. We can get Mangold for half of what we are going to pay for Wagner! 2. Alex Lewis can fill Wagner's spot. 3. Much easier to find a LG than a RT 4. We can target another position in the earlier rounds and not be worried about picking up a Tackle or Center early. Sounds like a no brainer! But I am a dumb fan!

Shortened so I'm not quoting a book... I think the biggest issues with the FO's drafting in recent years is twofold. 1. How many years have we had the same hole that we haven't filled? BPA is great and all, but at some point, you have to make the move get a guy at a position that hasn't worked out for several years. We need to choose where to be stingy. We don't want to pay FAs but we also don't want to give up draft capital to get someone either. When a position has been a problem for several years in a row, you have to pick and choose what you want to do and we've lacked heavily in that area. 2. Where are the star players? It's great that we keep hitting these doubles and getting good, quality players, but you need some top shelf talent to go along with it. This team has been hit hard by the complete lack of playmakers on the roster in recent years. We've failed to draft one and that has been a big reason for these consecutive rough years. Ozzie and Eric have done a lot of great things for this organization, but they clearly have to shoulder a good bit of blame for the recent struggles of the team. I'm not saying they should be fired or anything or that I want them replaced at this juncture, but they shouldn't get a pass either.

Yeah just about everyone waits until the final 5 to do any serious bidding on their guys when there are 24 hours to bid and nothing really happens during a large chunk of that time. If people put in serious bids earlier in the process, I don't see how things would be that controversial if they get outbid. But the current system rewards people who wait to bid so people wait

We're two months away from the draft and Brantley still goes unnoticed. That is beyond me, like, I just don't see what he isn't good at.
  40. 2 points
I don't see that... the only thing I see is he starts moving at the snap, when ideally your FS is moving before the snap. He makes plays in run support fairly often too, not Jamal Adams level by a long shot but he does well at being the safety net on run plays

there is nothing to disprove. since drafting Julio the falcons have done next to nothing to add others WRs through the draft. They only drafted 2 other WR in round 4 and 7 since then. Dont think i need to list all the WRs we have spend picks on since drafting Torrey lol TE aint even close to what we have done in filling that position compared to them. They only drafted 2 TE since 2011 in round 3 and 4. we drafted a TE in round 2,3 and 5 not counting waller who was a 6th rounder. Coleman was a 3rd round pick and Freeman was a 4th round pick. we drafted pierce , dixon and allen in the first 4 rounds since 2011. Since 2011 the falcons have drafted 4 oliners in round 1 ,2,3 and 7. We drafted oliners in : 1,2.3,4,4,5,5,5 and 6. Draft wise we have done a lot more for the offense then the falcons and i havent even considerd our pro bowl FB. If you want to argue about FA signings then go ahead but i would not recommend it lol

"Just leaving Flacco out to dry and doing nothing"? No, not really, but they've hardly broken the bank to load the offense with weapons. And due to unfortunate injuries(Pitta, SSS, Perriman, Watson, etc.) much of the efforts haven't panned out so well. Do you think they have done as much for him as, let's say, Atlanta has done for Ryan? I'll answer that for you......hell no. To be frank, this whole line of discussion is, again, ridiculous. Everyone knows improvement is needed from Flacco and I haven't read anything here saying otherwise. I think there was improvement over the course of last year. Seems he was gaining confidence in his knee and there's no reason to think that improvement won't continue. Everyone also knows the Ravens need to add playmakers and just need to improve offensive game planning in general.

That is actually a fair question. The FO had basically 2 options, both of which had risks: OPTION 1: Sign Flacco to a hefty contract, hoping he will be able to pick up where he left off in his playoff run and carry this team pretty much on his own. Risk being that Flacco fails to live up to the expectations and ties up much needed part of the cap space. OPTION 2: Refuse to pay Flacco the top dollar and let him walk, hoping you can find and effective replacement for him, in the meantime keeping the rest of the team balanced. Risk being that Flacco keeps playing on high level somewhere else and completely justifies his big payday, while we struggle to find true franchise QB. Of course everyone is smarter in hindsight. And I'm sure FO did what they thought was the smartest decision at the time. I'm not blaming anyone for the decision to resign Flacco, never have, though I'd love to know more about the thought process that went into the decision. I respect the decision, albeit as it turned out it wasn't the best one. However, it irritates me when people act like Flacco's contract is not the problem. It is very big part of the problem! I would not be, if he were to play as was hoped under option 1 described above. But he is not playing well enough. He needs serious help to play well. We can not afford help, because we do not have the money, big reason for that is Flacco's salary. It's more than just hindsight here with Flacco and his salary. First, people are forgetting that two very important things happened that altered the success of the Ravens the following year. (1) Ray Rice was expelled from the league - we lost our pro-bowl caliber RB so there went our run game that we were so dependent on the previous year and (2) Boldin was offered a contract according to the value the Ravens deemed he deserved, as such he refused and ultimately was traded. Then (3) Pitta went out with a broken hip. So while we want to say Flacco hasn't lived up to his contract the truth of the matter the entire team failed to live up to their expectations. I really wish people would stop with the Flacco bs; In 2014 Ngata's cap hit was $14 million - did he produce at $14 million - NO!!!! Is that Flacco's fault, NO!!! IN 2015 Ngata's cap hit was $7.5 million and he was playing for Detroit!!!! Flacco's fault, NOPE!! IN 2014 Ray Rice's Cap hit was $6 million and in 2015 his cap hit was $9 million - paid him $15 million to not even play!!!! Is that Flacco's fault, NO!!!! There is so much more going on with this team than just Flacco and his contract.
  44. 2 points
Or I just have common sense and am educated on the subject matter.
  45. 2 points
Yes it was. So when you get paid 28, and you're cap hit is 14, what do you think is going to happen in future years? Do you think that difference is just going to disappear?
  46. 2 points
Joe's contract has always been a sore spot to SOME fans , but not me, do I wish it could have been a smaller number, for cap reasons yes, but Joe is better than what any other QB we could get at this point, Those who think Joe is not the answer, look at- Philly, Washington, Minnesota, Chicago, San Fran, Rams, Arizona, Miami, Buffalo, Jets, Jax, Houston, Cleveland, Bengals, Denver, KC, San Diego.. Now tell me do you really want to get rid of Joe? I would like to Draft a QB, but this team needs a lot of youth in other areas first.
  47. 2 points
No! I refuse to even think that Flacco would have another season like last season. Flacco may never be a top 5 QB but he was regularly top 10-15 and caught fire in the playoffs. theres no way Flacco has another down year like last. He'll show up and his value will seem just fine.
  48. 2 points
Won't happen. If Joe keeps playing like he has do you really want to extend him beyond the two years? Well, we wouldn't be extending him, since he's already under contract through 2021. So in short, yes. If he played like he did last year, I see no reason to move on from him. If fans actually took the time to look around the league (and specifically the College game) and look at the alternatives, it would scare people into loving Flacco. Its that bad. I mean you don't really think teams think that guys like Bradford and Osweiler are really good QBs do you? They just know what the alternative is. Or just pick any franchise that hasn't had a respectable QB in over a decade what they think. The old "o just go get somebody in the draft or FA mantra" doesn't seem to be quite so simple then...
  49. 2 points
So your solution to poor salary cap management is to give us more salary cap space? Brilliant!
  50. 2 points
I have been hearing this since the day Joe signed his contract. "You just wait until the next QB signs his deal, then you'll see Flacco is only getting the going rate for NFL QB's". Well it's been 4 long years and every QB in the league has signed a new contract since Joe in 2013. Not one, not two, EVERY QB IN THE LEAGUE. But your right, I'm sure Romo and Cutler will be the highest paid QB's in the league this year. Wow.
