Again, not majorly improving our pass rush and secondary with so much talent available this year is mind boggling to me. You haven't addressed it via FA either, since top FA corner is out of reach with Ravens miserable cap space. I hate this mock.

Speaking of this thread, just finished watching some Flacco highlights on YouTube. Damn near brought a tear to my eye (figuratively of course). #makeflaccogreatagain2017

See, this is the part where Flacco critics frustrate me. Who are we as message board nerds -- who oftentimes don't watch the All-22 tape -- to question the football intelligence and defense reading of someone who actually made it to the NFL? It's not as if the TV view even shows the defensive coverage. I know he's not even close to the best mind -- that's fair to say -- but what credibility do we have to judge it? Do you watch the All-22 tape? Can you tell me what coverage shell a defense is in on a given play? Because if you're going to definitively say that Flacco can't read a defense, you should be able to tell me what you saw in the defense. Otherwise, where is your credibility? When I have time to watch the All-22, I don't question Joe's ability to read a defense or his intelligence. I question his decision making. A lot of times, he holds the ball, waiting for the big play. Then he forces passes or takes unnecessary risks. He's not a WCO passer. He doesn't throw the ball in rhythm. He doesn't throw the ball on the break like other QBs do. He waits. And that results in a lot of check downs, picks, and incompletions down the field.

Well, we actually watch him play unlike many others. Also plenty of analysts who actually know football, like former qbs Jaworski and esiason and Phil Simms, former qb coaches like mooch, and other respected analysts like Chris berman, all like flacco quite a bit and understand when his team lets his down, which happens far more often than the inverse.

Really why? Pitta is smaller then Watson, slower then Watson and doesn't come close to the career production that Watson has put up. (Watson in 11 seasons - nearly 5000 yards and 38 TDs / Pitta is 6 seasons has just over 2000 yards and only 13 TDs Watson is coming off of a serious injury but his pales in comparison to Pitta's injuries. Pitta is 5 years younger but I do not believe that his body knows that. and we have Watson at nearly 1/2 the salary as Pitta. Just curious why you say that you would rather have Pitta over Watson every day of the week... (I can only assume that this has more to do with non-football related preferences)?
  15. 3 points
10 reasons not to bring Pitta back. 1. I would not feel like a down grade if any of our TE's had to step into that spot. We are loaded at TE and can get equal or better production for significantly less money! 2. Watson is just simply a much better deal (as a veteran presence) then Pitta. Even if Pitta takes a pay cut... it will probably still be a higher salary then Watson- who is at least equally as talented (I think more) 3. NO YAC.... Pitta gets no yards after the catch and while a sure handed guy who can move the move the chains is highly valued in this league. Pitta simply does not move the chains. Look at his stats. Sure he gets a lot of catches but that is the majority of Joes meaningless check downs. (Look at the failed pass completion stats from yesterdays article). Pitta does not move the chains and cannot turn the small catches into something meaningful anymore. (and frustrates Ravens fans to death by always running routes short of the 1st down). No YAC renders much of his production meaningless. 4. His presence hinders the progression of our young TE's. Gilmore, Maxx, Waller, and Boyle all seem to simply not be getting the reps they need bc of a veteran presence who ceiling is fairly mediocre. 5. BC the passing game is hindered by Joe's reliance on Pitta. He looks for Pitta so much that he does find the open WR's or give the play time to develop 6. Gilmore, Boyle and probably Maxx are better TE's for our re-vamping the run game (and can still catch and move the chains). 7. Waller and Watson can split the seams and stretch the field and keep both the LBs and S's honest where as Pitta doesn't bring that same threat. 8. Pitta is an injury away from his career being over. (high investment for someone so fragile). Albeit, all players are only a play a way but Pitta has shown a propensity to serious injury and he commands more money then most of TE's put together (other then Watson) 9. I think he would make great trade bait. More so then probably Maxx, Gilmore, Boyle, or Waller (and at least equal to Watson). With as many needs as we have and the depth in this years draft... Pitta could land us a 4th round pick who can be an integral part of our future. (maybe 5th) 10. and this is no small point. Cutting Pitta puts Joe on notice. He seems to have called the shots on Trestman. He seems to have called the shots on retaining Marty. Joe had his way and didn't produce... now it is time for the management to due what is best for the team and tell Joe to stopping worrying about FO decisions and worry about playing QB and producing. This is not about taking care of your buddy or some boys club this is the NFL and with out production you get no say.

I think Quadry has a valid question as to why can't we develop young receivers. Is it just a coaching issue? Sounds too simple to be just that. You would think that they could at least learn from the vets that we have had, and we have had some good ones- Mason, Boldin, SSR and so on. I don't understand it either. That is really the only position that we see the slowest development (or none at all)

Played less than 100 snaps last year and sat out the entire season the year before. It's not a bad shot for 0.5 stars, but I completely see why no one would pay any more for him. His career is circling the drain.

I think more and more people start to see this way when they look at game field and scan where the wide receivers are on the field. The receivers on this team have struggled finding separation for years now. Sure Flacco has a boneheaded interception here and there but not much more than the rest of the NFL. The team needs a couple legit redzone threats I feel like the team moved the ball last year but couldn't get touchdowns. I'm surprised the wide receiver coach has kept his job the last few years after this issue hasn't been resolved.

Another little peek inside this "tortured" mind. My fiancée works with kids with developmental and emotional disabilities and the Ravens are very kind to support them. Brandon Williams always volunteers to work with these kids. And it's not in a fund raising capacity, he is one on one, personally working with and helping these young children. Let me tell you, this is not an easy thing from time to time. Yet Williams is there time after time, giving of himself and not just to sit and sign autographs and take selfies, he is in the trenches with these kids and their teachers working with them. Someone who is willing to give his all to a disabled child will give more than his all for his fellow players on the field and we need more guys like that and we would be a super bowl team. You can't teach smarts and you can't teach dedication and he has both.

NaVorro Bowman tops the list if he plays the same after the injury. Joe Staley's a solid LT. Their CBs aren't bad, and Carlos Hyde is a good starter when healthy. That being said, I agree that it's certainly an uphill climb and that the roster needs quite a bit of work. Kudos to @ludy51 for taking on the challenge. It's a good thing to see.

Cut Pitta and Watson and resign one of the two on a cheaper 1-year deal closer to camp. Cut Doom, Wright and the rest of the flotsam and jetsam secondary pieces. Let Wagner, Williams and Juice walk, and restructure Wallace to add a year and spread out the cap hit (2018 and 19 are more cap friendly). Sign steady FA options at OL, ILB, FS/CB, backup QB and FB. Draft BPA, getting playmakers (WR, CB, Edge Rusher) in rounds 1-2, and solidify the OL and pick up a 3rd down back/KR in rounds 3-4.

    1. Wagner's played pretty well every season he's played. The only "down" year he had was the year after his foot injury. Been a solid player when he's out there for his entire tenure in Baltimore... not sure why fans don't see this. 2. If you cut Pitta, and then sign him again, you achieved the same thing as getting him to take a paycut. The dead money doesn't disappear. That's why its expected that the Ravens will ask him for a paycut again, similar to last season. 3. Our QB doesn't need to do anything, especially when there's nothing to cut. He's only due $6M in salary this year, so asking him to take a paycut from that seems pretty stupid. Instead of asking the QB to take a voluntary paycut some of the people around him (and himself included) could just start playing better. What a wild concept. Players just need to play better.

Isn't Danny Woodhead a FA? He might be a good addition as a 3rd back, slot receiver and as a pass protector. If he's fully recovered he could be a value add that helps kill a few birds with one stone.

In just too many games this year, placement was extremely high and toward the body. Just not consistently putting it in front of his man.

I wouldn't touch Britt with a 10 foot pole. He's always had huge attitude issues despite his talent. He's never produced like he should have before this year and only produced last season in an Aikan like way: the Rams literally had no one else to throw to. He's also getting towards the end of his career.

It was, indeed, painful to see how often Flacco threw to targets yards short of the yellow line on third downs. TRhis, and his apparent utter reluctance to speed up things in the 2-minute drill periods, casually jogging to the line like there were minutes left, when the clock showed 35 seconds, with one timeout - only to throw a pass short ofd the first down marker, to the middle of the field, leaving no chance for the target to step out of bounds stopping the clock... It genuinely seemed like he couldn't care less if he tried... And I'm not saying it was the case - but it certainly seemed so.

I like the draft. I think one way to make it better tho is to take an Olineman instead of De'veon Smith (who I like too btw) and to put Hall or another tier 3 pass-rusher not named Phillips. I didn't watch any tapes of him, just the senior bowl drills and he didn't look comfortable there. Too easy to contain him. I promise I'll find some tapes and build an informed ompinion on the guy as soon as possible. I love Smart and saw you were also mentioning him back in November, if I'm no mistaken. Reeves-Maybin would be an interesting one too.

Agreeing with you up until this point. The Ravens had a very good rate at avoiding 3-and-outs. Of their 192 drives, only 35 ended in a 3-and-out, which is an 18.23% rate and good for 6th best in the league (LINK). That's in front of teams like the Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, and even the Patriots who were bottom 6. Also, the Ravens had a positive TOP on the year and were above-average (12th overall) for the league (LINK). The defense blowing leads had less to do with the offense and was more on their own failings. Losing Jimmy Smith really seemed to tank that unit and Pees could not adjust adequately - didn't help that some prolific offense came through, too.
