Since you obviously disagree, I suppose you think Flacco is the best QB in football?? Now, Flacco is not the best QB in the NFL, not by any standard whatsoever. See, this is the part where Flacco critics frustrate me. Who are we as message board nerds -- who oftentimes don't watch the All-22 tape -- to question the football intelligence and defense reading of someone who actually made it to the NFL? It's not as if the TV view even shows the defensive coverage. I know he's not even close to the best mind -- that's fair to say -- but what credibility do we have to judge it? Do you watch the All-22 tape? Can you tell me what coverage shell a defense is in on a given play? Because if you're going to definitively say that Flacco can't read a defense, you should be able to tell me what you saw in the defense. Otherwise, where is your credibility? When I have time to watch the All-22, I don't question Joe's ability to read a defense or his intelligence. I question his decision making. A lot of times, he holds the ball, waiting for the big play. Then he forces passes or takes unnecessary risks. He's not a WCO passer. He doesn't throw the ball in rhythm. He doesn't throw the ball on the break like other QBs do. He waits. And that results in a lot of check downs, picks, and incompletions down the field.

Flacco's contract isn't hurting the Ravens as much as people think. Over the first 3 years of the original contract, Flacco's cap hit was really team friendly. Since signing Flacco to the original contract, the team signed, Pitta, Jimmy, Monroe, Yanda, Tucker, Koch and Weddle to big deals. That doesn't include locking up guys like Zuttah, Wright, SSS, Forsett and Watson to deals that weren't big but the team thought these players would contribute a lot. They also made competitive offers to Torrey and KO. Flacco's contract hasn't hurt the team, that's just the perception going around. What has hurt the Ravens is these long term commitments and young draft picks not playing well over the last 3-4 years. The Ravens have been among the top of the league in dead money over the last 3-4 years because of poor contracts. Injuries have hurt as well. Flacco certainly has to play better and play up to his contract, but he hasn't stopped the team from signing anyone. Boldin was traded because the Ravens didn't think he could perform as well moving forward. Torrey wasn't a guy the Ravens would pay 10Mil for, especially since they have so much success getting close to over the hill WRs who can perform just as well as Torrey and no way they were paying KO LT money without being 100% sure he was the answer there which no one could honestly say. Seeing Flacco struggle on a huge contract sucks, but the reality is, the Ravens don't commit big money to outside players often and the guys they wanted to keep here they have. Flacco has to play better, but the Ravens were banking on guys like Perriman, Maxx, Brooks, Elam, Davis, Smith, Timmy, Taliafero, Buck and others to really step their games up and be the new era of players to keep the team performing well and that just hasn't happened.

I can not believe all the hate you are getting. I seriously do not comprehend how people can even defend Flacco's contract in this situation. Yes, he was signed after a SB run for the ages. But Oz himself has said that in this league you get paid based on "what have you done for me lately". Well, FACT is that lately Flacco has been among the bottom 10 of QB and FACT is that Flacco is getting like he is the #1 QB in the NFL. I just honestly do not understand how so many people can seriously believe that Flacco's salary is fair and fit considering his playing level.

Just to beat a dead horse as I am on record for saying there is no way in this world Flacco should have the highest cap hit in the NFL, here is a guy who has finished in the bottom third of qbs in the league for several years in a row. Bisciotti and Ozzie totally blew that contract by giving him an extension and pumping it up even more. The guy is stealing. He is robbing the ravens blind by taking that money. We are talking about almost a million dollars a touchdown that he threw last year. Ozzie needs to sit him down and let him know that he is destroying this teams ability to sign quality players by holding on to that money he doesn't deserve. He knows he isn't that guy and he knows he should be giving some of it back. The Ravens need to let him know that if he chooses not to take a salary cut that they will draft or sign a free agent qb and get him ready to take Joes spot in two years when they can finally afford to cut him. By then he won't be worth much and no one will go out of their way to sign Flacco. When I think of how Ozzie missed on Elam, Arthur Brown, Max Williams, Terrence Cody, etc... I think his biggest mistake as GM by far was the Flacco contract.

Well, we actually watch him play unlike many others. Also plenty of analysts who actually know football, like former qbs Jaworski and esiason and Phil Simms, former qb coaches like mooch, and other respected analysts like Chris berman, all like flacco quite a bit and understand when his team lets his down, which happens far more often than the inverse.

Yeah, I've never bought into the "Flacco is elite" argument. He's good enough to win a Super bowl if he has a good team around him. I mean, what's wrong with that? Don't you have to have a good team to make the SB anyway? He's not elite, he's above average. He does enough to win, and he's won the big dance before and has come close to getting there multiple times, where he is rarely the reason we fail. He's not Mark Sanchez like his haters want him to be. He's not elite, but very few QBs are. Rodgers, Brady, this year Matt Ryan and Carr. But if you put a good situation around Flacco, the team is gonna be successful. This year, we didn't have a running game, and the defense fell off at the end of the year because we don't have good pass rushers. Tell me, how is that Flacco's fault? Don't give me the money thing, we've invested a lot of money in Suggs(a future hall of famer) and Dumervil, who was a damn good pass rusher in his prime. It's because they got old!!! Jimmy going down doesn't help out either. As for the running game, it got better, but if you really watched it, the oline wasn't fantastic and Marty wasn't really one to call a lot of running plays(which is once again, not on Flacco). Flacco had one truly horrid game this last year, and that was vs. the Jets. He wasn't great the first half of the season, but outside of the Eagles game, he was actually a lot better the second half of the season. He wasn't the reason we missed the playoffs at all. In fact, and I know econ is gonna bring up the stats here, he played well enough vs. Pittsburgh to win. Our WRs dropped a few TD's vs them that were gimmies. We lost to Pittsburght because 1. No pass rush(we were blitzing every down on the last drive so don't even try to put this on Pees), 2. Bad corner depth, Tavon Young and Jimmy are good, but Powers and Wright are not. Sorry dude. We had no choice but to pay Flacco. Arizona would've paid just as much, and we'd probably be even worse off right now. It's hard to find a QB in the league who can win you a SB. Flacco has done it. Get over it, he's here to stay.

I have always been a "Flacco Homer" and i have never thought that about Joe. I know what Joe is and have stated it numerous times, yet somehow im biased, a homer, an apologist, etc.... Im guessing the "harassment" you received was people explaining to you market value which 4 years later you still dont understand. To say that fans dont care about the team as a whole, i dont know how you come to that conclusion, at all. Everyone here is Ravens fans but just because some of us dont want to cut, trade, or tell Joe to be the waterboy means we dont care about the team as a whole? I think more and more people start to see this way when they look at game field and scan where the wide receivers are on the field. The receivers on this team have struggled finding separation for years now. Sure Flacco has a boneheaded interception here and there but not much more than the rest of the NFL. The team needs a couple legit redzone threats I feel like the team moved the ball last year but couldn't get touchdowns. I'm surprised the wide receiver coach has kept his job the last few years after this issue hasn't been resolved.

That's a lot of money in safeties between Weddle and Jefferson, plus this is a fantastic safety class.

The thing I don't get is trading for Connor barwin when he only had 2 more sacks than doom last year and has a higher cap hit than doom and you're giving away draft capital - I think there's no way it happens

We draft well and train well at linebacker so I wouldn't waste a free agency pickup on linebacker. If we are going to do anything in free agency, lets get a position that we have trouble developing like a top notch wide receiver, or a shut down corner, or a coverage safety. I would take any of those in free agency over Barwin, Especially at 8 mil. You could get a pretty darn good receiver/corner/safety for that money. BUT, if we could get Barwin for between 1 and 3 mil for a year to see where he is at, I would sign off on that... I don't think we should cut Domervil if he is healthy. I think if he has truly recovered from his injury, and we have no reason to believe that he has not, then I would go with his numbers when he was healthy which were pretty good when he played opposite Suggs. Doom needs a producer on the other side and without Sizz, he was double teamed and chipped and nullified in the pass rush and we had no one else to step up so offenses could concentrate on Doom.

The flacco contract definitely is hurting us. In fact I would say that probably no other contract in the NFL is handcuffing their team worse. But I still would not call that Ozzies biggest mistake. IDK... Boller comes to mind. Allowing Harbs to bring Dean Pees in comes to mind... The Webb contract is up there. The Pitta contract is also up there. All the guaranteed money on the Ray Rice deal hurt us badly over the past two years. Sergio Kindle hurt us... But Flacco has produced (albeit not up to his contract) but he has produced. So... as much as his contract holds the team hostage... I cant call it Ozzie's worst move... but its top 10 for sure!

Not much we can do on his contract.... it is just a bad deal. Joe is clearly not a top 5 QB and yet paid like he is Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers. Nonetheless he has us and the best that we can hope for is that he gets close to being a top 10 QB- With that being said.. we need to put whatever pieces in place to help him to be successful!

That decision would have run us into the ground and instead of us being a "losing" organization(which is more attributable for us not retaining certain players and/or certain players getting older) we'd be trash. That off-season there was the worst QB class in recent memory. your choices were EJ Manuel(who sucks) Geno Smith(who sucks) mike Glennon(good backup. Not a starter though) Tyler Wilson(who's out of the league. Because he sucked) the draft after, we could've taken Mariota(who's probably going to be injury prone in the future even though he's pretty good) Winston(who we probably wouldn't have considered due to character concerns) Derek Carr(only QB on here who's not only great, but the only one I'd honestly take over Flacco). You clearly have no understanding of how difficult it is to find a franchise QB. At all. 2. Okay ravensECONbeast let's talk the economics of the NFL for a second and allow me to teach you something. Economics is predicated around supply and demand. The supply of QBs who have won a sb in the league is very low(Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Wilson, Brees, Flacco, Manning, Brady) Flacco has proven he can do it, and he was the catalyst for it. Even if his supporting cast was good during the run, a good supporting cast can be put to waste by a truly lousy QB. See. Brock Oswilier, and all the Arizona QBs post warner and pre Palmer. Yet, the demand is high. We have 31(except the browns since they seem to be content with sucking) teams who want someone who can do what Flacco has done. That's why idiots like Colin Kaepernick, Jay Cutler and Brock Osiwiler got paid as much as they did. Had we let him go, he could've gone to a team that was a QB away from being very good, say the Arizona cardinals, and turned them into a better organization than they had been over the past 5 years. Or the Houston Texans. Hell, even coming off an injury, if Flacco is on THIS YEARS Texans team, with Hopkins, Fuller, CJ, and Lamar Miller, and a very good defense, we might be talking about them in the SB right now. And mind you, half of the fan base stood with you. Fans had no influence on this decision. Letting him go would've been a death sentence for us as a franchise. We had no choice but to keep him. Just. In just too many games this year, placement was extremely high and toward the body. Just not consistently putting it in front of his man.

I wouldn't touch Britt with a 10 foot pole. He's always had huge attitude issues despite his talent. He's never produced like he should have before this year and only produced last season in an Aikan like way: the Rams literally had no one else to throw to. He's also getting towards the end of his career.

It was, indeed, painful to see how often Flacco threw to targets yards short of the yellow line on third downs. TRhis, and his apparent utter reluctance to speed up things in the 2-minute drill periods, casually jogging to the line like there were minutes left, when the clock showed 35 seconds, with one timeout - only to throw a pass short ofd the first down marker, to the middle of the field, leaving no chance for the target to step out of bounds stopping the clock... It genuinely seemed like he couldn't care less if he tried... And I'm not saying it was the case - but it certainly seemed so.

As the article explains, no. I think more accurate name would be "ineffective completion". Basically a completion, that doesn't do much good. So basically most of Flacco's completion that he dumped off to Pitta or one of the RBs right near the line of scrimmage was a failed completion. It doesn't surprise me that he set a record of those "failed completions" considering it was his go-to pass. Just sad.

Throwing short of the needed yardage to me suggests one of several possibilities: - receivers are not getting open downfield - Flacco is not trusting his receivers enough to let it rip and let them make a play - WR routes are not well designed to create natural separation - Flacco requires a more aggressive mindset when dropping back to pass - play calling needs work, based on such high numbers Either way, Flacco really better step up his game all around as well as put in extra time with his WR this offseason. I shouldn't need to be said, but if Flacco has another horrible season, at his current price tag, he very well might be writing the end of his time here. I am becoming more and more interested in the possibility of drafting a decent QB this draft for both competition and to replace Mallet, who I do not believe the Ravens will retain based on market value and cap space. at the very least some new young blood that can challenge for a starting role would do wonders to bring out more competitive play at QB period.

Yeah that FA period is just way too unrealistic. Don't forget how heavily tenders play into your cap space. It looks like a lot on the surface but those numbers go down quickly. Plus, as already mentioned, you could probably finagle cap hits for year 1 but good luck in future years. That's exactly how teams fall off a cliff.

I agree. Solomon Thomas is a player who I just don't get the hype. He's fun to watch and has a ton of great traits, he's a plus athlete with incredible burst and closing speed and strength, but at his size he needs to be on tape looking like Aaron Donald and he isn't. I think his size will keep him limited to a very solid guy who moves a lot. He could struggle if he goes to the wrong team

I get you don't like the direction we are going, but you literally just sit here and complain about everything. Why not actually try to say something where we can develop a discussion, ya know... Before we let some of our best players walk, we need to stack solid draft classes. Last year was great, but the three before that were so-so. It's very hard to let guys like B-Williams and Wagner go when we don't actually have any proven talent behind them. If we can nail this upcoming draft then next year I think we'll be in a much better position to let guys walk. I just don't know if it's wise for this season. We've gotta keep somebody to build around. We're gonna lose Doom, possibly Webb, and a few DBs. We've gotta figure out a way to maintain some continuity, or we aren't making it that far into the postseason if we can even get there. I'm starting to have doubts about our coaching staff's ability to produce quality starters out of mid-to-late round draft picks. Seems like we have plenty of guys that flash, but not many that are consistent. Wagner and Williams are models of consistency which is what you need in order to execute game plans and win games.

Consistency is what the Ravens strive for and it sounds to me like Derek Barnett is the only one worth a #16 pick.

I have the feeling that if Corey Davis falls out of the top 10, there are gonna be teams that will trade up to one of the 11-15 sports and take him. A true day#1 playmaker WR is simply too enticing. But I'll gladly be proven wrong :)

Will require a good enough to player to be there when we pick. We have about 10 positions where you could easily justify using a first round pick on, as we need playmakers at just about every level. OL, WR, pass rusher, CB, Safety, MLB, even RB or TE are all positions where we could easily use an upgrade. Last thing we want to be doing is picking a position instead of a player.

Except a productive player on social security is a short term fix. All that does is keep you competitive for the short term. You don't build SB champions with a team full of short term fixes. You have a blend of short term players with a primary core of young, productive players and players in their prime performing at a high level. Basically, the 2011-2012 Ravens. Its not like anybody thinks that Ray and Ed were the best players or the most productive players on those teams. The leadership thing is a bit overrated, especially on defense. You've got Suggs and Weddle, who are as big a leaders as you can find in this league. I agree that offensively we don't have an identity, but that's not from a lack of leadership. Fans only see what the cameras show them, which weakens the argument.

Agreeing with you up until this point. The Ravens had a very good rate at avoiding 3-and-outs. Of their 192 drives, only 35 ended in a 3-and-out, which is an 18.23% rate and good for 6th best in the league (LINK). That's in front of teams like the Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, and even the Patriots who were bottom 6. Also, the Ravens had a positive TOP on the year and were above-average (12th overall) for the league (LINK). The defense blowing leads had less to do with the offense and was more on their own failings. Losing Jimmy Smith really seemed to tank that unit and Pees could not adjust adequately - didn't help that some prolific offense came through, too.

I'd take cam Robinson at 16. I think he's gonna be a pro bowl guard which we need. Dude is ferocious in the run game

Someone gets it finally...sheesh....Flacco does not have to be Drew Brees at all. They can blame him all they want for our failures but he is not the biggest issue nor is the amount we paid him either. Look at the market and tell me who we could have replaced him with? Look at what QB's that have accomplished less are getting paid. It's as if they do not see what is going on around the league and how teams are being constructed to win.
